Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/05

It’s sunny crunchy and minus 18 this morning in Frederic. Schools from clare all the way to the u.p. are closed today. I like walking outside when its this cold to hear the crunchy snow under your feet. Temps are supposed to be up to 13 today so that’s not to horrible. I did get to take my first ride of the season yesterday and as I was just getting to leave here and decide which way to go the phone rang and it was Keith in the groomer just checking in with me and he said they had just groomed north from grayling to Frederic and about to head down 79 back towards grayling so that answered my question pretty easily. I headed off south on 7 to the loop back north towards Frederic. It only took me about 40 minutes before I came up on the groomers. They were running both big John Deere groomers to make a perfect trail. I took a picture of the groomers and then rode back south as I was going to get a video of them going by. My phone was at 90 percent when I left and after I took those pictures the phone was dead as can be. The cold really wiped that out in a hurry. Also for the first time ever my hand warmers weren’t working so I finished the loop back to Frederic. For a first ride of the season it was very nice but I need to get those warmers working. I checked the motels this morning and it was a low count with 1 at the Days Inn and 5 at the Ramada. Still waiting on a good shot of snow to go with the cold. Like I have said most everyday in the past couple of weeks, the cold is what is saving the trails and they are really holding up well for what we do have. I am ready to go again. I really don’t like to think about upgrading on my sled cause I love my big old Cadillac of a sled , the 05 turbo 660 arctic cat, I like a sled with a big windshield…….Thanks for checking in and Please remember to ride safely as the death count is now up to 3, all in the u.p. Pete

Sidnaw / Bruce Crossing Trail Report – 01/05

Groomer Report;

We are on an every other day grooming schedule for now. We need more snow to run every day.

The riding conditions are Fair to Good with the northern parts of our trails being better. The grade from Sidnaw to Ewen is quite thin in some areas.

The wet spots and muddy holes between Bruce Crossing and Rockland on trail #3 are all frozen now but there isn’t enough snow to fill everything in yet so you may find some holes here and there.

Please DO NOT climb the “Military Hill” from the highway, US 45, to the fence, we have ongoing erosion issues there and the hill climbers are adding to the problem. YOU COULD CAUSE THIS MAJOR TRAIL TO BE CLOSED IF YOU CONTINUE!

Please ride on your own side of the trail and STOP at the stop signs!

Trail #3 North to Rockland is FAIR to GOOD, better as you go north.
Trail #8 from Ewen to trail #3 North is FAIR.
Trail #3/8 East from Bruce Crossing to the trail #3 South intersection is FAIR.
Trail #3/8 West from Bruce Crossing to the trail #3 North intersection is FAIR.
Trail #3 South from the railroad grade to the CC road is FAIR to GOOD, better in the woods.
Trail #8 from the trail #3 South intersection to Trout Creek is FAIR.
Trail #8 from Trout Creek to Kenton is FAIR.
Trail #8 from Kenton to Sidnaw is FAIR to GOOD, better as you go east.
Trail #8/15 from Sidnaw to the trail #109 intersection is GOOD to VERY GOOD.

Watch for the groomers, they take up most of the trail and have the right of way!
Please pull over and DIM your lights for them, they have a long night out there.
Remember, you can get off the trail, the groomer can not.

When I report “base” that is the depth of the un-groomed snow on my yard South of Sidnaw. There is no possible way to accurately report what the depth is under your snowmobile on the groomed trail, it varies widely.

Have a fun and safe trip, thank you for riding our trails and visiting our local businesses!
