Petoskey Area Trail Report – 12/30
December 30, 2020
Groomer Tom and his wife Brenda are out panning and checking out the trails. We sure could use more snow to get some base going, but it looks bleak the next couple weeks. Keep doing those snow dances and hoping for snow.
Keep in mind that groomers have the right of way and try their best to look out for you. Be sure to throw them a ‘Thumbs Up’ to show your appreciation for a job well done!
Did you know…
The cost to groom 1 (one) mile of trail is $5.13? If you divide that $5.13 into the $48 trail permit cost, you will see that after you have ridden just a few short miles the $48 spent on the permit has been used up. This is the cheapest part of your snowmobiling budget yet goes a long ways to support the Michigan Grant Sponsors that help groom YOUR trails.
We need you
If your reading this and ride our trails, we need your help,we are in need of members. We are one of Michigan’s oldest clubs, forming in 1969, over the years membership has gone up and down, right now we have less than thirty members on the rolls and probably only twelve actually do all the work. Even if you can`t help all the time with brushing in the fall or grooming thru the winter, some help, when ever available would be more than welcome. If you can`t help physically your membership dues helps us do the things the DNR doesn`t help with. Again, if you like smooth trails, we need you, the trails don`t groom themselves.

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Feb 4, 2026, 3am…Nuisance flurries hang on today, but the clipper parade returns starting Thursday, with a reinforcing shot of arctic air Friday that will result in some travel impacts as temperatures fall from near freezing early to the teens by afternoon with more snow showers and blustery conditions. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> 2/3/26, 3am...A cooler day today with lingering north flow lake effect snow showers, especially near and west of Traverse City. Highs struggle to escape the teens. A quiet and warmer day Wednesday…before the next system approaches for Thursday, bringing a return of snow. JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> Monday update:
Pisten Bully is still down on trail 4/76. NDA ordered Wednesday showed up Saturday afternoon. Crew got out there Sunday but found more damage and parts were ordered today.
If you happen to find this boogie wheel between Alba and trail 76 north of Elmira please notify us, we need to get our hands on it. New part is on order and scheduled to be in tomorrow.
If all goes as planned trails will be back in shape by end of the week.

HARBOR SPRINGS AREA UPDATE via Harbor Springs Snowmobile Club >> Happy February! ☃️
Overall, our trails are in great shape! The only rough section is where they are logging on 71/Chadderdon Rd. We had a groomer out on the grade last night from Pellston to Alanson & two out tonight, one on the grade from Pellston to Mackinaw & the other on the west side of our trail system. We plan to have at least one groomer out every day this week & through the weekend.
🪵 Logging Operation – Trail 71 🪵
There is still an active logging operation on Trail 71 at Chadderdon Road. Although numerous signs are posted, we are still seeing riders not slowing down.
Please use extreme caution in this area:
- Skidders and log trucks are entering and traveling on the trail
- SLOW DOWN
- If you encounter logging equipment coming toward you, get off the trail or turn around until you can safely move aside
- Do not try to go around them — they are much larger than you, cannot stop quickly, and have the right of way
Your safety (and theirs) depends on it.

Clouds increase tonight, and snow is likely late tonight into Monday morning. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are likely in eastern upper and northwest lower Michigan, with an inch or less in northern lower Michigan. HARBOR SPRINGS AREA UPDATE via Harbor Springs Snowmobile Club >> We had all three groomers out last night and the trails are in great shape! Everything was groomed other than the cross village loop. It’s going to be a great weekend to get out and ride, tomorrow is going to feel like a heat waive with a high of 27!
