SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/14 A bit of good news! Most models now show the rain mostly staying west ( so sorry to our friends out that way 😟 ) and the minimal rain we might get will be overnight and very early morning when temps are a little cooler. It might not hurt us as bad as we thought. It may even be a rain/snow mix. Snow forecast is still up in the air. There is still a lot on the ground and in the woods. Trails will be hard and flat with thin corners and overheating is definitely a concern. Roads sides remain bare. This is my dirt road today when it was 44 out. By tomorrow, it’ll be down to dirt. I haven’t gotten any trail pics but will share if I do. Temps are supposed to drop quickly by Thursday morning and if the dang winds cooperate, we might even see some lake effect pop up. I’m not trying to be overly optimistic and I know it can and likely will change, but I feel better about this than I did even just this morning. I will keep updating! <> Good morning! We are trying where and when we can! Groomer Bill was out very early before temps start climbing on what we call the B25 route. This is trail 8 from Brimley to Ranger road, and 480 to the Spile Dam turn around in the Delerium Wilderness. Here’s what he had to say- “I groomed B25 this morning. The power line and grade to Brimley were real rough. It was my bumpiest groomer ride so far. It took both passes to smooth things out. The base is still holding up, but we really need more snow and cold temperatures.” This may be the last groom for at least the next two days. Our west winds kick up to the 30-40 mph range later tonight. Prior to that happening, a northwest wind will batter some lake effect areas with an additional 1-3" this afternoon, with pockets of 4"+ possible. As we move into Tuesday, a widespread blanket of 2-5", with pockets of 4-8" will overtake the Lake Michigan shoreline, eastern UP, and Keweenaw Peninsula. Temperature difference between water and air, plus adequate lift will fuel lake effect all the way through Wednesday morning. Additionally, we have a clipper moving through on Tuesday that will bring isolated pockets of 1-3" to the east side. Most locations should still be beneath an inch, however, too many variables are in play to not mention it.
Travel will be impacted along and west of US-131, with minor travel impacts all the way over to the US-127 corridor (I-75 north of Grayling). The clipper will be swinging through with the initial push of gusty winds after midnight tonight through 10 am Tuesday morning.
