LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming – 01/23

Lake Gogebic Area Grooming Update:
The Lake Gogebic Area has been an area of extremely high traffic and groomers have been doing all they can to keep up with the volume of visitors! Thanks go out to the cold temperatures for coming in strong and helping to close up any remaining spots. Cold temperatures are to remain constant this week with mid 20’s during the week and down into the teens in the evenings. Snow is forecasted for several days this week and we will see what happens!

• Trail 8 East: groomed Sunday night and is reported to be
good, flat and fast!
• Trail 8 West: Groomed Saturday and in good condition and
water holes have sealed up!
• Trail 13North: Also groomed Sunday night – it’s like a snow
paved highway and reported in good condition.
• Trail 1 North: was groomed Saturday night – good condition.
• Trail 1 South: good condition
• Trail 102: groomed Saturday night. In good condition.
• Trail 100 and South end of Lake Gogebic – all trails have been
groomed and reported in good condition.
Groomers will be out every night of the week – and let’s just keep our fingers crossed for snow!

<>

Crews out cleaning up the trails after the weekend by Marenisco. With the colder weather we are able to start building back up the snow bridges to cover the water. Cold weather also keeps some of the wildlife moving too, some wolf tracks and territory marking on the freshly groomed trail! Never know what you will see when out grooming!!

WATERSMEET - WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via U.P. Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club >> UPDATED 12/3/25- Well we had 4 different crews out today all with mini excavators or tractor loaders clearing and as you can see from the pictures it is truly a disaster. Crews were only able to make it maybe 3 to 5 miles each so we still have a long way to go. We will be renting another mini excavator so will have a 5th crew out tomorrow.
We will continue to update our progress daily. If you are available Saturday December 6 9:00 am meet at our barn next to Headwaters Polaris . You will need your own snowmobile to help us clean up the small stuff the big equipment missed. #watersmeet #westernup #snowphotos

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> Update from the Marenisco end of GAG. Crews out about 12 hours today working on brushing/clearing trails in our area. The goal today was to simply make the trails passable so we can start grooming. Here’s the status on progress:
Trail 1-From Marenisco south to Job Corp Rd is passable and panned. From Marenisco north to the end of 8800 passable but not panned. Trail 1 is temporarily closed after 8800 to the Gogebic County line (close to Copps Tower Rd
Trail 2-passable and groomed through Marenisco
Trail 100-passable but very rough, wet in areas, and many whips/branches.
Trail 13-temporarily closed from Trail 100 southward. Passable from Trail 100 northward to Camp 6 Rd but many whips/branches. A reroute is being worked on for 13 south of 100.
We are hoping to complete clearing Trail 1 from Marenisco to PI tomorrow and that will mean that all of the open trails in our area are passable.
Our next step will be to get out and pan, repair/update signage, and tackling all the remaining whips/branches.
Adventurous sledheads are welcome to help by accessing some of these trails and cut/saw/snip the whips and low branches. Just understand that pretty much all that is out there are groomer tracks so it’s rough and still very wet in low areas.
Be careful out there folks, we are getting closer but still a lot of work to get done! #lakegogebic #westernup #snowphotos

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> Good afternoon sledheads! Just an update from the Marenisco section of GAG. Crews have been out working since the recent storm dumped almost 3 feet of snow on our area. The wet heavy snow has really created havoc on our section of the trail system. At this point, East/West travel on Trail 2 is open and panned but use caution as early season conditions apply despite the snow volume. We have been working on Trail 1 both north and south from Marenisco. Northward is still impassable beyond the west end of FR 8800. Southward towards PI is been about half completed but impassable beyond Job Corps Rd. Trail 100 is impassable at this point but crews will be starting to work on that also. Our goal is to focus on the large obstructions so we can get a drag through and pack things down. Once we get to that point, we will need as much help from brother/sister sledheads to pack a small saw and remove some of the small hazards. We appreciate all the offers for help but if a section is not panned, it’s best to stay off as the snow is very deep in spots. Just getting out of the groomer finds you in hip deep snow in some locations. Wish we had better news but we love to ride too so attacking it head on! #lakegogebic #westernup #snowphotos ... Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Don't look at us, we're just the messenger, but more lake effect snow is on the table for Wednesday into Thursday, December 3rd & 4th, 2025. Some lighter flurries from these bands may make it over to eastern Michigan as well, but the odds are stacked against.
Discussion
As a cold front swings through, our favorable wind direction, water-to-air temperature difference, and other favorable lake effect ingredients ramp back up. At the current time, we are seeing enough signs for decent lake effect accumulation, primarily across the east-central UP, and slopes of Elmira/Gaylord. We begin with a couple 2-5" zones, but these areas may quickly see a jump to the next category up at our final call update tomorrow. Totals of 1-3" in west Michigan and the Porcupine Mountains will also suffice for now, but a few locations may see an upgrade to 2-5" where confidence improves. It's Michigan, it's meteorological winter, so while it may not be breaking news, it's still weather news that we must report. As meteorologists, it IS our job after all.
Timing
Primarily from noon Wednesday through 6 pm EST Thursday. Extensions for this time period are being monitored into very early Friday.
More weather updates coming to you throughout the winter, so make sure to follow us here at Michigan Storm Chasers to never be out of the loop again when it comes to statewide weather updates, both snow and severe. LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> our December 1st 2025 Update from Gogebic Area Grooming... We are making progress, slowly but surely.
8e to East shore Rd. and 13n to M28 has been opened up. All gates for 13n have been opened as well.
We are still telling everyone conditions remain hazardous and we don't recommend riding until we have a chance to run our Machines through each of our trail segments. We'll continue to update as that is accomplished. Also today, the in town trails were all opened up and the corridor trail to 1n and 1n up to the swampy area just before m64 crossing was opened up and we are calling 1n Bergland to White Pine passable. No packing or panning has started yet. Tomorrow we will continue through the corridor towards 102 and another crew is headed to our worst section 8e to Ewen. Anyone willing to help out. Fire up the sled, bring a chainsaw and give the guy's a hand. I believe they'll be starting around 10 am Eastern time.
We could definitely use the help!!
That's all for now. ❄️❄️❄️ #lakegogebic #westernup #snowphotos
