Paradise Area Trail Report – 01/07
January 7, 2023 19 degrees this morning and cloudy. Looking at all the long range forecasts makes me sad. I hate this job sometimes. I will try to put a positive spin on something, so here we go…….. Groomer Glenn WAS gonna hit the Point trails today. He decided to take a little sno-mo ride around them yesterday and discovered 3 large water holes had opened up on the northern section. He told me they are deep and you can`t get around them and had doubts a groomer could make it thru. Other than that section the trail looks good (my positive spin). Groomer Mike C. is gonna hit the Pine Stump trail today. This trail is fairly dry but I know there are a lot of dirt and gravel spots, but it is in decent shape most of the way (positive again, see). The Falls trail just plain sucks. Ain`t got nuttin positive to say there. Stay outta there…the gates are closed. Well…….there ya go. I might not get on here for a couple-few days unless something really changes, so take this report as is for now. The town trail has lots of snow and no water….lol….other than that south of town sucks. I talked to the boys who ran it yesterday and thats what they told me. We even had to close the gates to the federal forest section because of water. The power line don`t look so good either.

We’re almost caught up here… but it looks like another round of snow pushing is on the schedule for today! #newberry #snowphotos 
No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.
Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks. A new two-day record was also broken at the NWS office in Marquette of 36"+ with this blizzard, which is just one record smashed by this blizzard.

Trail update
Firsts thoughts are what the heck do we do??? Well at the moment we unhooked drag and running the John Deere track tractor just to try and break through. We received somewhere around 3ft so far where it hasn't blowed. There is 6 ft plus drifting in spots. The drifts are gonna get hard to. As much as I would like to say it's awesome out here it just isn't and will take several days to get somewhat of a trail. We are just getting started so there could be more surprises but we are trying!! For the next several days if you are coming up our trails are drifting and there is so much snow that it will take several trips to get smoothed out. We will update when things change.
