TRAIL REPORT March 3, 2022 Great Trails but Trouble Again! Trails in an overall good to very good condition. Operators were reporting very good results with our trails primarily in very good condition east of M94. The west side Trails are in very good to good condition. Trail 7 South of Buckhorn was not groomed last night due to our Pisten Bully going down again. A casting on the cooling fan clutch broke again. It will be down for at least 2 days. Hopefully parts arrive before the weekend, otherwise….. We will do what we can with the Programs Spare Bully and our club owned John Deere 7130. As far as the Big Deere still awaiting a return delivery date. Lets hope the great trail conditions don’t drop off too quickly. Ride to the Right and Stay Tuned for updates! Base is thin on the west end by Little Lake so we will see some deterioration on sunny days now that the sun is up longer. Looks like a little more snow due today and Saturday, so we should expect very good trails until a brief warmup on Sunday. We are running minimal runs in order to keep the trail smooth and save the snow for the rest of the season. Trail is ice and is grooming out as such. We will keep doing the best we can with what we have to get through the end of the season. A few light snow showers will be possible in the higher terrain of the western half through tonight, with minimal accumulations less than an inch. Most locations will struggle to get above freezing today, with the exception of areas near Lake Michigan. A clipper will spread a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain across the area this morning, changing to all rain from west to east as temperatures climb above freezing in the afternoon, reaching as high as the mid 50s in the west. A cold front then drops across the U.P. and brings another round of mixed precip tonight, changing to all snow towards Sunday morning. Generally expect minimal snow amounts across most of the U.P., but some spots in the Keweenaw and the east could pick up 1-3” through Sunday morning. Alger SORVA pulled a day shift assist and smashed down our problem areas with the Bison today, but that didn’t stop us from getting into a bind with too much snow! The tunnel under 41 had a 3’ (settled height) drift down the entire length and it was too much to push through. We are close to the roof of the machine during normal operas we scrape it down close to the bottom. One of our operators threw his personal track loader on a trailer and came to the rescue. Between the track loader and the Deere, we were able to clear the tunnel out and get back to grooming.
