TRAIL REPORT February 22, 2022 TOOK A BEATING BUT RECOVERING! Trails are in an overall good condition with this past high traffic extended weekend hitting them hard. Operators have had their work cut out for them cutting some rather large moguls in areas. Trail 418 and Trail 417 are next in line to get cleaned up. We did get the Bully back up and running for last night and put it to much needed work on Trail 422. Operators are doing what they can with the tools at hand as we anxiously await the return of our Big John Deere. Get out and enjoy the trails and Stay Tuned for updates! This week now as you may already know, we could see a lot more snow, up to 18" on the trail. We will groom when it is safe to get out. So if you go out and its a bit rough, we are keeping our operators safe, and one of us will be out when it is safe again. There may be drifting on the trail with this next storm, so keep that in mind if you go out on the trail. Here are a couple of pics from last night’s groom. No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.
Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks.
