Gaylord Area Trail Report – 01/23

Gaylord Bureau –

January 22, 2022

We’ve gotten 8-10 inches of fresh, fluffy snow today! This has given our trails a great boost for weekend riding. Trails are in good condition and the snow is still falling. Keep THINKING SNOW!

As always, check back with us for updates and weather reports.

Sledheads of Frederic – 1/23

Saturday it snowed all day, gave us about 4 to 6 inches of new fluffy snow which made things alot better. I think Frederic had a little more snow than in Grayling as I only had about 2 inches at home. Still made the first decent weekend of riding. Lots of people having a good time. We still need some good system snow to help with the base but we have to start somewhere. For those of you that have been on here for years you have heard me talk of the Darkside Adventures ride. Typically they do a ten day ride thru the wilderness of Quebec or elsewhere in Canada. This year they are starting out in New Hampshire and heading up into Maine. You can follow their blog at this link http://darkside-adventures.squarespace.com/new-blog

I was out in New Hampshire for the grass drags in October and from what I saw while I was there they have an incredible trail system thru NH & Maine…….. All pics below are from Saturday. Thanks for checking in. Pete

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via 9&10 News >> Winter Storm Update: 3-15 Sunday 1PM
Phase 2 of the Winter Storm is kicking off! This will bring heavy snow and gusty winds still for the U.P. and Tip of the Mitt. The icing area we have talked about for the last few days landed where we thought it would. Leelanau down to Wexford and Northeast. These areas could see up to .5" of ice through today and tonight with isolated higher amounts. Winds will continue to gust upwards of 40-50mph. The snow totals map you see is on top of what you have already seen.
Don't be fooled, the lull from the initial burst to the second part is the system nearing. The second phase will be the worst with this storm. This afternoon - Monday morning.
I will be live with an update this evening at 6, right here on the 9&10 Facebook page and the 9&10 News YouTube channel.
We will also be live on tv at 11! #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey #soo #newberry

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Final Update For Ice Accretion:
A dangerous ice storm will begin tonight for portions of northern lower Michigan. The heaviest ice accretion takes aim in a localized area from Traverse City to Gaylord to Atlanta with over 0.50" of ice expected. Around this area, a zone of significant icing between 0.25' to 0.50" is expected - which is still enough to take down tree limbs and create power outages. The worst of the icing will be tonight into Monday morning, and then we deal with high winds moving in Monday morning as well which will only exaggerate the effects of this event.
Plan for multi day outages, near impossible travel, and scattered tree damage, some significant. #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey #soo #newberryFinal Update For Ice Accretion:

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Snowing out and 29 degrees. Only about 2 to 3 inches of new since last night. Just had 2 sleds in here, Cameron and his friend and they want to try to head to the bridge but I told them I felt that will be a tough ride. The bridge is closed again this morning for maybe the 8th time this week. KInd of a drizzle wetness on my front windows at sledheads and the weather said supposed to be rain this afternoon. Only had 4 sleds in here yesterday and saw several over at the Swamp and about 6 over there now for breakfast. There were 4 sleds at the gas station when I got here about 10. I have the sledview.com camera up on my screen and just saw the first sled go by. Thats it, who knows what this weather will or wont bring. Pics below are this morning and 2 sleds that rode in yesterday on the nice sunny day. Thanks for checking in. Pete P>S . sunny pics are yesterday and Cameron and his friend are sunday morning along with a pic towards the swamp with my plow in it. #gaylord #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
Key Notes:
•Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening.
•Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday.
•This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state
•Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower
Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.
Stay tuned for the icing portion of this forecast. Northern lower Michigan will see significant icing which is not shown or communicated in this forecast graphic or write up. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOne of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Along with significant snowfall, comes the chance of significant ice accretion. We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. We still expect a corridor of 0.50” or more across Cheboygan, Boyne City, Gaylord, and Rogers City regions. The further south you go, the less ice accretion becomes... #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyAlong with significant snowfall, comes the chance of significant ice accretion. We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. We still expect a corridor of 0.50” or more across Cheboygan, Boyne City, Gaylord, and Rogers City regions. The further south you go, the less ice accretion becomes.

Within the 0.25” and 0.50” zones, we expect multiple power outages along with scattered tree damage as a result of the weight of the ice and gusty winds combining. These outages may be multi-day outages, and those in these two zones should take necessary precautionary actions to ensure you are ready.

Outside of the heaviest ice accretion, near impossible travel should be expected due to icing and heavy snow that may blow around.

Speaking of blowing around, winds will be gusting between 40-50mph across northern lower Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. This will aide in further worsening of tree damage and power outages.

The WORST of the freezing rain occurs Sunday evening and continues into Monday morning. We expect Monday to be the worst of the event for the icing area.

Please see our previous forecast for snowfall information, and please reference our wind map set to be posted around 7:30pm which focuses on Sunday.
