Munising Area Trail Report – 01/15
TRAIL REPORT, January 15, 2022 BITTER COLD RIDING CONDITIONS! Still no new snow with an increase in rider traffic and the trail system in an overall very good condition, good in towns and near roadways. Temperature were in the negative double digits last night. Groomer Operators were once again getting very good results last night. Overall no real changes so get out and enjoy the great riding conditions. Stay Tuned for updates! On an important side note, SLOW DOWN! The bad side of smooth trails is fast riding. Within 6 hours yesterday we received two phone calls from our field contact concerning the death of two riders. These were two separate incidents in different areas, both were riding too fast and missed corners. So you can ride for many days to come, slow down, ride for conditions and stay right. Light snow is possible south of an Iron Mountain to Escanaba line but any accumulation will be very light. Stop in and see us!! GWINN AREA UPDATE via Forsyth Snowmobile and ATV Club >> Trail update for Gwinn area, Central Upper Peninsula. Our town is in need of snow, took a ride East over towards Alger County and they definitely have more snow over that way. Buckhorn area was smooth all the way down south and across over to Big Springs area. Big Springs area north had some small rocks on the trail and once we got by the Jack Pine Trails were good again. Came through shingleton and quite the snow storm at 6:00 on Saturday evening. Unfortunately the snow didn't come to our town. Additional snowfall of up to an inch in the west and 1 to 3 inches in the east can be expected. Then a transition over to lake effect snow over the west to northwest wind snowbelts. 3 to 7 inches of snowfall over the east tonight into Sunday morning. A widespread 1-3 inches of snow is expected, possibly locally higher up to 3-4in in the eastern UP. A change over to lake effect snow is expected in the NW wind snow belts Saturday afternoon, lingering into Sunday. Uncertainty exists primarily in our trace-1" category which extends from Frankfort and Alpena south to I-96/I-69. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise.
