Gaylord Bureau – March 4, 2021 – 8:28 a.m. If you’ve been watching the forecast, then you know we’re experiencing a winter warm up. After a weekend with temperatures near 50 and some light rain, our trails are in poor condition. The base is holding up better in more wooded areas, but plan on running into some patches of mud and ice if you head out. We’re getting a dusting of snow today and the forecast calls for temperatures in the 30’s to low 40’s throughout the week. Not a thing has changed around frederic or northern michigan for that fact. I skipped the past 2 days for updates and you know I would be on here in an instant if something exciting happened. My back parking lot is an ice skating rink and there have been nieghborhood kids running and playing on the ice so at least someone is having fun. I did have 2 different sets of people stop by yesterday on their way to the U.P. The Vets ride is in Seney on saturday and it is still on. They do a great job of taking people on an 80 to 100 guided ride with a stop for lunch and then a dinner afterwards. Anyone can go, Veterans go for free and there is a fee for non veterans. Michigan is going to showcase all seasons for today, March 26th, 2026. If you're heading north of M-55, a wintry mix will greet you. Snow totals of an inch, perhaps more will be possible, and a snow map will be out in a bit to showcase totals on a statewide basis. Meanwhile, summer is here temporarily as showers and storms move in by late afternoon south of Grand Rapids and Flint. High temperatures will be in the 60s, and even low-70s, especially south of I-94. More warmth means more fuel for storms though, so on a day like today, you should be rooting against warmer high temperatures to avoid severe weather. Speaking of temperatures, just an insane gradient from north to south. High temperatures in the low-20s for the Keweenaw Peninsula, while areas just south of the Michigan state line jump to near 80°F. Precipitation will start early up north, while southern Michigan doesn't start seeing shower activity until afternoon. More details to come in a bit on our severe weather, but the peak timing along and south of I-94 for severe weather will be after 3 pm EDT. Main severe weather hazard today will be very large hail, so it's probably a good idea to protect your valuables today if you're in the southern two rows of counties, just out of an abundance of caution. Marie at 34°F, while the warm spot of the day will be near New Buffalo in Berrien County at 69°F. A 35° swing from north to south. Winds will be gusting between 15-25 mph primarily across the Lower Peninsula today, with a few gusts to 35 mph possible along Lake Michigan. Small craft, take note. Highs will reach the 50s in many areas south of M-32. There’s a chance for snow and rain today in eastern upper Michigan.
