Grand Marais Trail Report – 02/24

GRAND MARAIS UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. – 02/24

Statement from GM Sno Trails
We’ve heard your complaints and frustrations about our trail system. Believe me when we say we’re frustrated too. We know our trails haven’t been up to our standards and there are explanations as to why. The last 4 days we’ve had temperatures approaching 40 degrees and not falling off in the evening. Two of our groomers attempted to groom and ended up turning around and not being able to finish because of the conditions. We do have 3 groomers headed out shortly to do the west, south and north trails tonight as the temperatures have finally dropped.

We unfortunately have a critical shortage of groomer drivers this season that is making it almost impossible to hit the entire system every night as in the past. We have drivers who own their own businesses that take up much of their time, some have full time jobs outside of grooming and we’ve had one driver down for a week due to health issues. It’s possible we may be able to pick up a groomer (already trained) in the next few days. To start training a new person this late in the season really isn’t feasible. We know this explanation doesn’t improve the trail conditions but hopefully explains it. We’re doing the absolute best that we can with what we have to work with. Please keep that in mind before commenting.

The weather has been another factor in the condition of the trails. Another warm up is predicted for Saturday and Sunday. Traffic has also played a big part. Usually it slows down during the week to allow for more time to get the trails back up to our standards. That hasn’t been the case this year. It’s been extremely busy 7 days a week. And please remember that we have the second largest trail system in the U.P. (second only to the Keweenaw) of over 260 miles. It’s a big job under perfect conditions. As of now, the plan is to hit all the trails at least once and if all goes well twice before the weekend hits. Please ride safe and take care. There have been way too many accidents this winter already!!

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Snow showers will end across the eastern U.P. later this morning as a passing clipper exits the region. Cloudy skies linger through the day, with highs ranging from the mid 30s in the east and near Lake Superior to mid 40s in the west and south-central U.P. Another weak clipper crosses the lake tonight, bringing a chance for some light snow showers across the north. Morning trail report! If I were you I’d skip my coffee and call in sick because Mr Tucker and his trail paver have been working on their snow dance and they are really laying it down. It is amazing on trail 89. Hope to see out here... #grandmarais #newberry #snowphotosFrom groomer Mark.

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> After a quiet and sunny afternoon, expect increasing clouds tonight ahead of a quick batch of light snow showers late tonight into Tuesday morning. While much of the UP picks up an inch or less of snow, higher totals up to 1-3in will be possible over the far eastern UP. Moderate snowfall rates may lead to reduced visibility and slick roadways in the eastern UP during the Tuesday morning commute. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #sooAfter a quiet and sunny afternoon, expect increasing clouds tonight ahead of a quick batch of light snow showers late tonight into Tuesday morning. NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association >> So let me start by saying we are in contact with the DNR about trying to get some more money to finish the season out for grooming. We have enough left for four days unless the DNR comes through. We should know more tomorrow, but we are not grooming until we know what’s going on or we may switch it up to every other day until the end of the season or wait till Friday and groom until we’re done. It’s kind of up in the air right now, but we will let you know. #newberryUpdate the DNR got us a additional $7000. We will be able to finish this season out thank you everyone for your comments and support !!!! ———————————————————————————————————————————-//-So let me start by saying we are in contact with the DNR about trying to get some more money to finish the season out for grooming. NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association >> Trail 9 9PM
Eh, hour and a half to second stop sign, 10.3 mile, not spinning, good bite but pulling alot of disagreeable heavy snow.
Blade still wants to push up a wad and roll balls off the end.
So, creative dragging it shall be for the time being.
AGAIN, THEY SAY, its actually supposed to get quite cold tonight, what I am able to leave behind is shaved off highs an filled in holes, if it freezes up, should last much longer than the last several grooms.
We shall see. Keep you posted.
10:34 Windy Corners finished, not bragging but its flat, again if temps work with us, it freezes up, should offset any memory underneath, thats what I'm gunning for.
Just turned right to disappear in radio silence, time to get comfy for the long haul,I'll keep you posted later. 😊 #newberry #snowphotos

We rode from newberry yesterday and definitely need to trailer out of town . Trails were good I thought we rode up past pine stump and did little loop on 8/9 than back to newberry and last mile coming into newberry was pretty slushy from the warm all in all way better riding than we did on Saturday to trout lake!

Finally seen a groomer out late towards eving by trout like. It looked like a tinker toy compared to the tractors n groomers here in Kalkaska. I was surprised.

Great !!! We rode to trout lake yesterday and it was brutal but cannot fault your work and dedication it’s the weather ! I talked to driver I passed coming into newberry great guy!!
