Munising Area Trail Report – 02/02
MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA – 02/02 TRAIL REPORT – Tuesday, 02/02/2021 NEW SNOW REALLY NEEDED! No real changes: No new snow with trails in overall Good groomed conditions. We have pretty good riding conditions across a majority of our trail system but snow is soft with a thin base. We still really need a substantial heavy snowfall to help bind things up and keep the trails in decent riding condition. Our Dubie Groomers have their wings working hard to keep what snow we have pulled back into the trails. North of Shingleton was flattened out but hard and thin with little to work with closer to Shingleton, expect to see some gravel mix in areas. Some tight corners are getting icy throughout our area so ride with caution. Trail 422 has vehicles still driving on Miners Castle Road. Trail 419 between Munising and Wetmore is rough with a challenging creek crossing and no snow to work with, ride with caution. Trail 418 has little snow with a gravel mix along the big lake near AuTrain. Please respect residential property owners and STAY ON THE TRAIL, No Snowmobile Signs mean just that. Snow gets thin over by Gwinn. Some bumps in the trail are literally the ground because we don’t have enough snow for a super flat base. Traffic is high this weekend as Gary is reporting many sleds on his run tonight. Photos are from Steve last night on the east end where there is still workable snow. Restaurants are gearing up to reopen! PLEASE patronize the establishments that support the clubs and trails! Without them, we all have less support . Less support = less trail opportunities! A snow squall. Maybe that’s what we had going on in Wakefield today. It was nuts! WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> The first round of snow continues through mid-morning before most get a brief dry period into this afternoon; snow showers persist in the Keweenaw. Then a transition over to lake effect snow over the west to northwest wind snowbelts. 3 to 7 inches of snowfall over the east tonight into Sunday morning. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Another system brings a quick round of light to moderate snowfall late tonight into early Saturday. A widespread 1-3 inches of snow is expected, possibly locally higher up to 3-4in in the eastern UP. A change over to lake effect snow is expected in the NW wind snow belts Saturday afternoon, lingering into Sunday. Uncertainty exists primarily in our trace-1" category which extends from Frankfort and Alpena south to I-96/I-69. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise.
