Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/01

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Western & Southern UP Trail Reports – 1/1/2021

Watched the sun rise as I left the barn this morning. No fresh snow in 2 days now but its staying cold at 11° this morning. Trail 3 from Atlantic Mine to Dollar Bay was in pretty good shape. Other than along the canal and under the bridge was pretty wooped up. Heading south to Toivola is in very good shape due to more snow. I’ll be out tomorrow with another trainee.

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Western & Southern UP Trail Reports – 01/01

TRAIL REPORT NORTH OF HOUGHTON
1/1/21
First of all, Happy New Year to all! Sorry for no update yesterday, groomers were out in full force all day!
Trail 3 from Mohawk to Clear Lake is in decent early season shape. TRAIL 3 IS OPEN FROM CLEAR LAKE JUNCTION OVER BROCKWAY MOUNTAIN! Gates are open but conditions are thin.

Trail 124 remains closed for logging.
Trail 122 to Gay is thin to fair, with some water hazards operators are working to repair.
Trail 130 to Eagle River/Eagle Harbor was groomed for the first time yesterday, conditions were fair with a good amount of snow in the higher elevations, but thinning near the lakeshore.

Trails 134/135 to Copper Harbor, 134 would be the best choice for traveling to Copper Harbor, as 135 needs more snow for better conditions. 134 to High Rock is being groomed today but early reports are more snow is needed.
Trail 132 East/West to Lac La Belle are in good early season conditions.
Trail 17 from Mohawk to Hancock is in fair early season condition, with thinner spots between Kearsarge and Mohawk.
All trails are still in early season shape and bumpy in spots due to high traffic. Ride Carefully and enjoy!
Also for those not familiar with the regulations, ANY WHEELED VEHICLES ARE PROHIBITED ON TRAIL. We have had two incidents of cars on our trails already this year!
Stay safe, stay right.

Today was another great day riding Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula
! It may still be early season conditions but the trails are beginning to shape up nicely. Groomer Operators really moved all that fresh snow that fell yesterday to lay down some nice trail conditions.

If you have been able to ride already this season please share some of your photos with us in the comments.

If you are not up here riding now….. do you have your first trip booked?

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> Brrrrrr….. 🥶it was definitely a cold day to ride the Keweenaw, but Jason Kremer definitely wasn’t complaining!
Jason and crew headed out today from the Ramada in Hancock and rode up to Copper Harbor for the Winter Wonderfest & Park
Lighting Event! (Checkout the video Jason shared with us in the comments!)
Jason is a frequent rider of the Keweenaw and today definitely didn’t disappoint! Jason shared these photos and said, “You definitely need to tode to Copper Harbor tomorrow! Trails are not freshly groomed but they are flat and fast! The only slightly bumpy part was the trail up Brockway, but not bad for a Saturday in the Kee! There is zero traffic today, only met one group of sledders all the way from Hancock to Copper Harbor. Having a blast, will send you pics when I get service. Maybe we will run into a groomer on the way back!”
Well, as you can see from one of Jason’s photos, they did come across a groomer on the way back from Copper Harbor!
We hope you all enjoyed your Saturday as much as Jason did!
Please note as of right now the, The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is not yet open for snowmobile crossing. That means you can not cross from Houghton to Hancock…. yet.
The Coast Guard needed to close the shipping lanes and then the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club and the city need to coordinate laying the snow mat for sled crossing…. Hopefully, very soon!
Thanks as always for sharing, Jason! #keweenaw #snowphotos
