KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/24

Mike Siegel spent the last three days riding miles and miles of trails in the Keweenaw. Each day Mike shared his photos and comments that the trails were awesome and in great condition! Once again a huge thank 👏 you to the Groomer Operators who groomed their last routes for the 2019/20 season yesterday!

Thanks for sharing Mike! It is great to see your photos and remind us all of our amazing seasons!

How do you get there?

Hungarian Falls! You actually get out and experience the smell, the crunch, the crisp air...and there's a waterfall for Pete's sake! The highway is nice, but can't beat Hungarian Falls!

I have been there at peak color beautiful tunnel of trees The smells and sounds is beautiful. It can be tricky All it takes is some north west wind gusts to end it all

Sad that the atv-utv trails are closed!! And now I hear they closed brockway to atv traffic also ?? I’ll take my weeks vacation and money elsewhere I guess

Rode my bike on it. Spoiled be. I gave up road biking when I left the UP.

Been up through the Keewenaw last two yrs.in the Fall.Colors were incredible.

A. Both are beautiful ! Gotta go with Hungarian Falls

Brockway Mountain is a must see in the fall too!

I have and I took that picture! I use it as wallpaper on my home screen.

I am pretty sure covered drive is out by redridge.

Best to walk up Hungarian falls

We have a camp at Mandan, the log house. So we have spectacular views from our windows.

For some reason, I get car sick from the Lac La Belle sign to Copper Harbor. I have to keep my eyes closed.

When is the best time to go? Was thinking first or second week of October

Great memories of the times I would see this beautiful drive.

The Covered Road in Redridge is breathtaking as well.

Nope but planning on this fall❤🍁🍂

Love it in any season. ❤️ 🍃 🍁 🍂 ❄️ 🌧 ☀️ 🌲 🌳

Hadn't left the house in a few days...wow! The colors are starting!

One of the fall experiences not to be missed!

Both of them up there 😉

Yes

Will be there in October. 🍁

Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

Covered Drive 🙂

Yes - gorgeous!!!

Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula

Hungarian Falls

The KLT's 10-acre Hungarian Falls Nature Area includes the uppermost falls, historic dam, pond, and woodland trails. Visitors are treated to an awesome spectacle year-round but fall is truly a spectacular sight. The uppermost falls are located on the Keweenaw Fault, a billion-year-old geological feature that helped shape the Keweenaw and now stands strong against the erosive forces of Dover Creek. Cascading over the tough conglomerates and basalt's for about 30 feet, the creek then flows through a short gorge formed out of the softer Jacobsville sandstone layers below.

Downstream of the dam and pond are 3 more waterfalls. The lowermost falls are truly a sight to behold. Dropping over 100 feet into the gorge below, the lowermost falls are only visible in their entirety from the base of the valley, but it is a very treacherous and challenging hike down. Most visitors are more than happy to stand at the top of the falls and view them from above.

Directions: Along M-26 west of Lake Linden in Tamarack City, turn north onto 6th Street. Take the left fork (Golf Course Road) and drive up the hill 0.5 miles to an access road on your left marked by a closed gate. Park along the shoulder. Please use caution as some parts of the trail are very steep and there is uneven terrain.

Today, Hungarian Falls is up against US-41's Covered Drive...in the Keweenaw's Fall Colors Challenge.

Finally found the lower falls this year after many attempts. There really is no trail there, but there is a very narrow footpath that forks away from the main trail and leads down to the creek. If you just keep climbing along the creek you eventually get there, but there is a lot of deadfall/washed out areas. You might have to cross the creek a few times so wear shoes you don’t mind soaking.

Good stuff thank you for sharing your knowledge of the history up there is pretty cool. Nice job

Definitely the Falls. The covered drive is nice but the falls make you want to keep coming back!!

Oh this ones a tough call. They are both beautiful.

Beautiful

Took these in 2016

Both are beautiful! Special place in my ❤️ for the Falls!

Covered drive - many people aren't able to hike rough terrain.

They’re both beautiful!!

Thanks. I can't wait to visit.

☠StretchPeak Fall Color Soon!
Week 6 U.P. Fall Color Report is now on funintheup.com
Color is set to change quickly this year, it could be two weeks and we might start hitting 75%-peak. In some areas with these temps dropping into the 40s and daytime temps in the 50s and low 60s peak could very well hit in some of the interior portions and western UP . If you are waiting till 2nd week of October to visit the UP for colors you'll probably miss out on the best color and be left with a sad face, but you'll still be in the UP so it should be a happy face. -- Yooper Steve with your weekly UP Fall Color Report

Is this for snowmobiling also or just atv/utv

So if we want to ride copper harbor do we have to trailer there? Or are there other routes we can take from Houghton?

For sleds it wouldn't be that bad, there more trails up there plus ride the lake up to Gay, MI too, fun ride too. Miss the u.p.
