Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/10

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/10

It is amazing what the team of Groomer Operators were able to do yesterday after a two day warm up where temps in areas reached almost 60 degrees.

Trails were flattened out. The temps dipped low Sunday night therefore the mashed potato consistency of the trails really hardened up. Trails were firm, flat but a bit icy without much loose snow. Scratchers were key yesterday. I’ve included some of yesterday’s photos.

Groomers are out again this morning and the sunshine today is not only making the ride beautiful but it is already loosening things up in areas.

For those that haven’t been following along with posts and are looking to possibly extend their season with a ride to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula I will repeat some of the basics….

❇️ Grooming continues as long as temps and conditions allow until the end of the season. You can also download and activate up to moment grooming information on the Groomer Tracker app. for $10 – $5 of which goes directly to the club and $5 to the operation of the app Check it out! Two groups that just joined yesterday were very pleased with the information they received

❇️ Getting through Houghton/Hancock is not advised (even though I met 3 different groups myself yesterday that did it). Almost all is completely bare pavement

❇️The majority of road crossings and parking lots are bare

❇️ Trails that include a small portion running alongside of the road are getting more difficult as the snow on the shoulder banks diminishes. I spoke to several groups that still ran trail 122 out of Lake Linden and they said they were still able to ride the side with snow cover. I did not personally do it.

❇️Trail 132 to complete the loop from trail 3 out to Trail 134 or to get into Bear Belly Bar would require some road running…… I did personally do this and was TOTALLY worth it to our group as it is one of our favorite restaurants with delicious food and drink. Fuel is also available here.

❇️Trail 124 did not have any issues and very limited road to cross to get to Gay Bar & Grill and fuel is also available here

❇️Trail 130 “The Eagles Loop” was great – this is always a great alternative if you prefer to get a break from running the grade of Trail 3. We did ride into Eagle Harbor Inn and the road still has a bit of snow/ice cover along the side but there is a bit of bare pavement. Once again a favorite stop of ours

❇️Trail 134 was in good condition. A lot of riders I talked to yesterday really enjoyed that trail. Getting out to High Rock can be a bit choppy and thin but the view is beautiful! Especially on a clear day like today.

❇️You can access Copper Harbor from both directions either coming in from trails 134/135 or up across the mountain. The road connecting the two entrances will primarily be bare from one trail to the other, but once again we continue to access it to Copper Harbor Fuel Stop and The Mariner North for a delicious meal. The views from the lookouts when coming in across the mountain are a must see!

❇️Some establishments reduce hours or days of operation. I will try to share the ones that I personally know about, but would always suggest checking yourself before planning routes.

❇️ Staging is still being offered I believe at both The Trailside Lodge and Vansville Bar. Trailside is conveniently located right on Trail 17 and Vansville is located right on Trail 3 where it intersects with trail 124. Vansville also has fuel available. You can also always call and check availability at each of these locations.

🚫Trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden is closed due to the destruction from the Father’s Day Flood of 2018 and lack of repair granted by the state yet

🚫Trail 133 is closed due to logging

⚠️You might encounter active logging in the immediate vicinity of Trail 3 just north of Phoenix…. the trail is NOT closed but be aware the logging trucks might need to cross the trail to haul logs to the highway…the logging trucks DO have the right away so please allow trucks to pass through and obey any signage or direction. I can tell you that this began on March 4th and I have personally passed by countless times since then and not encountered any trucks…. but letting you know it is a possibility

🗑 🚮🚯Please pick up your garbage, whatever it may be. Yesterday it appeared one group
of riders consistently left their empty beer cans along the side of trails where they stopped. A huge thank you to Adam Garvey who stopped and picked as many of these up as he could. Our group picked up countless shredded belts, empty oil containers and just miscellaneous garbage. This just disappoints me personally as a visitor to the area also, it’s so unnecessary and disrespectful.

❓If you have any further questions or need help planning routes, obtaining lodging etc., please just ask.

📷PLEASE if you are currently UP riding share any photos and trail condition reports you have with us! It is valuable information to others looking to possibly plan a trip up to ride yet this season. Information from various sources is key as opinions can differ!
