Groomer Report
Overall Story:
Monday 2/10/2020 9:00 am CST:
No fresh snow, but the temps are allowing the groomers to keep trails flat. Corners here and there are starting to get icy in between grooms. We are seeking additional groomer operators to join us ASAP. Local lodging can be provided for committed volunteers. There looks to be some snow later this week, the upcoming weekend should be exceptional riding!
WARNINGS AND NOTICES: We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there is 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal areas! The Ottawa National Forest is 990,000 acres and much of it open to cross-country riding (no trail/road) if there is 6″ or more of snow. Several restricted areas, contact the forest for further information. Call 906-932-1330
Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Last groomed 2/09/2020. Please do not ride on sidewalks near Holiday and try to keep noise down in town.
Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating: FAIR TO EXCELLENT
Last groomed 2/10/2020. This is a tight trail with tremendous amounts of traffic. Corners will get icy along with the hill climbs in between grooming. We’re going to do some snow finding grooms later this week to add fresh snow into the base to help it hold for the weekend. This trail is featuring a brand new section to enjoy this season, the club eliminated Prospect road route and moved the trail completely into the woods eliminating 1.5 miles of road route. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND RESPECT THESE LANDOWNERS!
Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall Rating: EXCELLENT
Last groomed 2/10/2020. Also in the best shape of the season. The section from Wakefield east to Highway 2 needs additional passes to finish cutting the deep inside corner bumps and widen the trail. We expect to get to that this week yet.
Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:
Overall Rating: EXCELLENT
Last Groomed 2/10/2020. In excellent condition, be aware of a new traffic pattern on the northern end due to a plowed section. Please follow the new route for the remainder of this season.
Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):
Overall Rating: EXCELLENT
Last Groomed 2/7/2020. There is logging about 1/2 way north on the trail, YIELD TO LOGGERS AND GIVE THEM RESPECT – IT’S THEIR LAND! STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!! This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride! Stay on the trail in the farm fields. Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly. There are several scenic vistas on the trail:
Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior
Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak)
Montreal River Gorge look out
Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):
Overall Rating: EXCELLENT
Last Groomed 2/10/2020. Increased logging traffic is in the area, PLEASE YIELD TO ANY AND ALL LOGGING TRAFFIC. There is a short section of dual use the landowner (Keweenaw Land) has graciously approved us to use along with them. It is private land and we are guests, please act like it.
11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine): Closed due to off trail riding. Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it. 200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

Groomers are running nightly, trails are in good shape. Groomers run once a day and typically at night, so towards the end of the day with lots of traffic the trails are going to be rough until the groomer goes out again
Trail #3 from the Wisconsin border to Watersmeet good but lots of traffic very hard to hold a groom, Watersmeet to Paulding good. Both logging project on Trail #3 are done
Trail #2 west of Watersmeet to Trail #1 south, very good
Trail #2 east of Watersmeet to Trail #107, good but lots of traffic hard to hold the groom

Question: How many riders know what to do when you see a groomer on the trail? ... See MoreSee Less

Comment on Facebook

Stop!!! Wait for groomer driver to signal to go around.

Stop and turn around and go the other way?

Stop/pull over until the groomer stops and signals you to pass.

We do!

The obvious answer is to challenge the groomer to a game of chicken.

Pull over, off the trail if possible, give them a thumbs up as they go by. Thank them if possible.

none of them their blood supply is cut off to their brain when they put on their helmet

Buy their lunch when you see them stopping for a break.

Pull over. Give the operator $20. And say thanks. At least that's what I like when I groom.

We have been having conflicts on who should move over so the groomer can get through

Pull over /stop - wait for groomer instructions/allow to pass gesture

Pull to the side stop wait for the ok signal

Now if we could teach the people who have no clue...

I think the groomers should have a lock/deposit box on the outside of the machine where you can throw a few bucks when you see them at a bar or restaurant. So many people are able to ride the trails due to the clubs hard work.. but a small percentage join clubs because they are visiting from out of the area.

Pull over and throw up a thumbs up as they pass !! Buy them lunch when you can

If you meet the paradise groomer south of town, the groomer stops while our group dropped down onto the roadway to let him Pass on the narrow trail.

Look for Bride whom fell off . Lol Seriously tho. Stop n pull over approach slowly

Sled need to get over and stop and wait for the operator to motion them to get by. Any person on a sled that thinks the groomer needs to get out of their way needs to get off the trails.

Pin it to win it. Of course...

Our drivers have been yelled at because they made the snowmobile pull out of the way. We can always pull out the snowmobile but the snowmobiler couldn't pull the groomer out if we pulled over to far

If I am approaching the groomer head on I get off the trail wave as they go by and thank them. If I am coming up on back of groomer I stop n wait for them to move over if they can. If they cant then it's a slow ride for a while

My question is. . .how do you signal other that a groomer is up ahead? Is there a signal.

Move to the side. stop. Wave at the groomer so what he’s doing for your enjoyment is appreciated.

pull over wait f or him to motion you by wave say thank you and if he stops give a couple of bucks to get himself a drink when he is done

It’s an enterprise rental key ring that’s 💯 truth I know

If you are going to bring a spare key, don’t chain it to the primary key

There for a Ford...they are better off without them

Probably easier to walk than drive a Ford

Rental car keys

Those are rental car keys

What guy keeps both keys together

It was C-O-L-D last night! As Mike Secord and his son took the T7 for trail 8 Club President Steve snapped a video of the rig cooling down before a long night of making trails awesome. We feel 160 is a great ride today, Bob Kennedy groomed it completly from 9pm until 4am this morning. By 3pm our entire system will have been groomed twice in the last 24 hours, some sections more. Trails this weekend will be GREAT, the temperature forecast continues to reduce high temps, but even if it didn't we have gobs of snow on our trails region wide. Grooming crews from all clubs continue to run hard, please come support our efforts!!

Trails were fantastic all weekend!! Thanks for all the hard work!! We appreciate it!

Ted Hamilton you betcha! That was my son Garrett Secord walking by in the video last night when we pulled the groomer out of the barn. We did trail 8 from Bessemer towards Tula we only saw 4 sleds the whole night. It was a cold one for sure.

Thanks for sharing, nice to see the pride all have in caring for the trails.

Thank you for your dedication.

Ted Hamilton I wish I knew you were up! Let me know when you are in the area again I would love to go out for a ride with you.

That new trail 1 was awesome

Mike Secord ? The one I used to know ?

We were through there around 430 today didn’t see anything. Know how he feels we lost one (exact same sled) about 3 years ago. Hope he gets them back.

Our group saw this laying against a trail sign east of Bergland. Not sure if it’s still there or if someone picked up. Just thought I’d offer up that bit of info.
