Ironwood Trail Report – 02/11

IRONWOOD / WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via Gogebic Range Trail Authority – ORV & Snowmobile Club – 2/11

Are you joining us Saturday for our February Club Business Meeting followed by our club ride? The ride will be guided by Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures bringing you to Saxon Falls, Montreal Gorge, Superior Falls and as pictured in this post, Bald Mountain. Groomers are out today grooming 160 and 2 from Bessemer to Marenisco. Trail 8 will be hit tonight. We’d like to thank all the AWESOME guys that reached out to help us groom! We have two going through training tomorrow and one was trained Sun/Mon! Thank you to the Gogebic County Forestry Department for helping arrange a brushing event this fall to clear these overlooks for viewing. What a difference! Thank your grooming volunteers if you see them out!

It was C-O-L-D last night! As Mike Secord and his son took the T7 for trail 8 Club President Steve snapped a video of the rig cooling down before a long night of making trails awesome. We feel 160 is a great ride today, Bob Kennedy groomed it completly from 9pm until 4am this morning. By 3pm our entire system will have been groomed twice in the last 24 hours, some sections more. Trails this weekend will be GREAT, the temperature forecast continues to reduce high temps, but even if it didn't we have gobs of snow on our trails region wide. Grooming crews from all clubs continue to run hard, please come support our efforts!!

Trails were fantastic all weekend!! Thanks for all the hard work!! We appreciate it!

Ted Hamilton you betcha! That was my son Garrett Secord walking by in the video last night when we pulled the groomer out of the barn. We did trail 8 from Bessemer towards Tula we only saw 4 sleds the whole night. It was a cold one for sure.

Thanks for sharing, nice to see the pride all have in caring for the trails.

Thank you for your dedication.

Ted Hamilton I wish I knew you were up! Let me know when you are in the area again I would love to go out for a ride with you.

That new trail 1 was awesome

Mike Secord ? The one I used to know ?

We owe many thanks to Vice President Jerry *Nezzie" and Groomer Man Dan for working over night and thru Sunday fixing the blown Hydraulic line on the Tucker, what a mess, what a job and what a job well done! Thank you to Brian H., Bob K., Matt R., Mike S., Charlie B., Scott S., Nezzie and Groomer Man Dan for making the trails exceptional this weekend. We apologize to anyone we haven't gotten trained in for grooming yet, but we will be reaching out soon! Trails for next weekend will be exceptional, fresh snow next several days and good cold temps. Good job thanks

Thanks guys!

Please be alert in the Wakefield area Saturday, tomorrow! It is a free ice fishing weekend and the wonderful guys at the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department and the Wakefield VFW Post 9084 are hosting a fishing competition. Due to a trail change at the VFW this year they are asking riders to TAKE THE LAKE route to get through town. Please note you must maintain 100' from any person or structure or vehicle on the ice. There is a current at the bridge, please follow the pounded down trail on the shoreline on the west side (Left) of the map. Their parking lot will be full of vehicular traffic, pedestrians and kiddos enjoying a day on the ice. They ask you to please keep the sled traffic to the lake as much as possible! The main hours of congestion will be 10am-2pm.

Thanks for your consideration!!

STAY ON THE TRAIL!!! This happened TODAY in the city of Wakefield. This is exactly what nearly caused us to lose the trail in 2016! What will it take riders to respect our trails? Michigan is not a free for all and the vast majority of land is privately owned! Please stop this crap!!! ... See MoreSee Less

It's amazing how many of you have offered solutions that require tremendous labor. Are you going to come help us? Are you going to buy the ribbon? Are you going to put the signs up? We're a skeleton crew of volunteers trying to help our community. We are NOT HERE FOR BACK COUNTRY RIDING. What a poor showing from many of your responses. You show the massive amount of ignorance you have thinking volunteers who are barely keeping up can spend 40 hours a week ribboning off areas. You guys are a joke.

This is why wisconsin has no legal off trial... give an inch and assholes take a mile. Plus the legal off trail stuff in Michigan is way better than that field.

That is not "off trail" riding. That is trail riders who trespass within a few hundred feet of the marked trail.

Signs would help get da point across.. it's better to have to put up some type of rope, ribbon, fence barrier, before you lose the privilege forever..

I don't know why it's so hard for some people.

That's wierd, wish someone would come up with the technology to maybe put up something like a sign to mark it. Seems like a sign could be put up every mile through private property to mark stay on trail, just a thought

So disrespectful! There are signs EVERYWHERE that say to stay on the trail!! Is it that hard to read!?

Its the same bullshit in Wisconsin that the clubs r dealing with

This is why I don’t ride in populated areas. If it’s not in the woods, I don’t want it! Does suck though. People have no respect anymore.

When we rode 160 on super bowl Sunday there were a bunch of local kids off trail in farm fields. I didn’t want to confront as perhaps they had permission and we were pressed for time

This makes me angry. I have not seen it happen, but have heard people talking about it in bars/ food places. I could help some what, I belong to a different club but can help monetarily a little bit. Say 100 bucks? That help?

It really is long over-due that the off-trail riding opportunities in the Western UP be defined and publicized. Gogebic County Forestry along with the Ottowa National Forest have miles of seasonal forestry roads that provide off-trail opportunities. It should not be such a well kept secret!

Please don't be an offender. I love our trails! Don't let them go just because you want a little power. Please don't ruin it for the rest of us!

Stay on the trails or you will ruin great trails and be stuck riding on the edge of the road more ! Don’t wreck it for everyone

Just think, the DNR was only 2 miles down the trail randomly pulling over sled groups that did nothing wrong "to check registration and stickers". You want to fix this, get the government to stop harassing sledders and actual do some policing!

Perhaps making a post about where you can legally ride off trail might help. Might not stop a lot of people but it may help guide some in the right direction.

Must of been a mountain sled with a can and backpack

That's NOTHING compared to the crap that I've seen.

Ins liability is the biggest reason land owners are closing off their land ! And people going off the trail even a little bit gives them an excuse to do just that. Deny access ! It's a vicious circle ! My 2 cents ! 😎

They should inform everyone buying a license of the consequences of going off trail. New comers probably don’t understand what they are doing. In lower states open fields are pretty much free reign unless it is posted. Just a thought!

I just hope all of you commenting on this are turning in or never riding with your buddy’s that do this crap. It is never a single person almost always a group. Call Them in when seen. Law needs to step in more to save sport.

Exploration is a huge part of the sport some of you don’t seem to understand that lol leave the off trail guys alone the ground is solid what the hell are they hurting off trail..? I get everywhere is different and where I’m from everything is free for all most of the locals don’t care if your ride the land just be respectful and don’t leave your garbage laying around.

Sad that people can’t respect the land owners. 🤬

Stay on the trail. Our passion and sport relies on the honor of our fellow riders.

I love the comments from the citiots I come up there and spend money if that’s your attitude stay home no one needs your money point is stay on the trail no one cares about what you do just keep your ass on the marked trail that’s it
