Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/06

Greetings Sledders,

Well the Sun didn’t behave and we lost a fair amount over the last couple of days. I groomed the trail South of M-72 yesterday and it’s getting pretty thin and icy. North of 72 the snow gradually gets heavier but it is also crusty from the daytime sunshine and nightly re-freezing.

I would imagine that the poor spots have only gotten larger, at least the ones in direct sunshine, and the dirty snow probably took a hit as well because it’s like a magnet when it comes to the Sun’s rays.

With all of that said the Davis guys were in and rode 210 miles yesterday and were happy with their rides. So things aren’t all bad. Although we do need snow and it looks at least promising but not until Sunday at the earliest.

We are continuing to groom on a regular schedule.

The trails can only take so much heat and with two weekends of cloudy skies with warm temps, rain, and mist and two days of Sun, the weather is taking it’s toll. So I’m dropping the overall rating back to fair with some poor spots mixed in. Another wacky winter indeed.

Next report Monday

Greetings Sledders,

We got 4+ yesterday along with some hefty winds.

Everything was groomed yesterday and into last night and the trails are good to very good. Probably the best that I've seen in a number of years.

There was significant drifting in the clear cut and open areas which provides for an opportunity to be amazed at the amount of snow these tractors will simultaneously push and pull and not break a sweat. Instead of relying on the drag to bust up the drifts which can sometimes lead to a mild roller coaster effect, we drop the 10ft wide blade and do some old fashion drift busting. It's the most fun you can have in these tractors while being fully clothed.

It's anybody's guess as to what affect the warm up will have on the trails although traffic will be much lighter than last weekend and that should help a little and there's a ton of base to eat through before a total breakdown occurs. Let's hope for the best.

Fay's Motel & Cottages

Greetings Sledders,

I'd like to start by going way back to last Thursday. I groomed the Lovells trail and I had a frequent visitor here at Fay's ride along for the 5 hour trip. A gentleman by the name of Maurice. He was here the week before and expressed a desire to see exactly what it is that we do in our big green tractors. He called on Wednesday and said he was headed to the U.P. and would I be grooming on Thursday which it turned out I was. During the trip he asked me to guess his age and I admitted that I didn't have a clue. Turns out he is 88 and going strong. Rides in the Grayling area quite often and enjoys a couple group rides in the upper every winter. Hope you enjoyed the ride Maurice.

Apparently our grooming efforts over the weekend were a success as we received many positive comments from the riders that we talked to here at the motel. The groomers had a heavy schedule and they all did the best that they could to try and keep up with the very heavy traffic.

Right now the trails are in overall good shape. I groomed trail #7 South of M-72 today and the snow has slowly built up to the point that that segment is no longer thin and the ice has been buried on all of it except for the inside of a few corners. I was pulling a full drag and working the blade going uphill and not breaking traction.

We are pushing and pulling good snow on the rest of the system and we are expecting 3 or 4" tonight.

Beware of the warm up coming this weekend. Impact unknown at this time.

Gotta Go

I want to give you and the grooming crew a big Thank You! We went out this weekend and the trails where great. I have not seen that many riders out in a long time and you guys kept up with all that traffic making it all smooth again. Thank you again!!👍

Maybe I missed it, but Why is the gate pulled shut on the trail crossing at 72 by tinkers?
