Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 12/14

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 12/11

I’d say Glenn Rowe is having a great day at work….. beautiful conditions to groom and a beautiful “co-pilot”. Cathy Rowe is able to join him today on his route!

To be honest I dream of days like this! Does anyone else have the desire to move UP north and help maintain trails for a club, all while having a spouse be able to join you? …….. ok, well I’m sure SOME might prefer their “alone” time…. 😂

Huge thank you to Glenn, Cathy and ALL the other groomers for making such beautiful trails out of ALL this SN❄️W that has fallen! Most areas are approaching 100 inches of total SN❄️W for the season so far, if they haven’t reached it already!

Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula

"Back in my day we had to walk 15 miles to school, barefoot, in the snow, uphill--both ways!" 🥶

Take a drive down any backcountry road and you are likely to see a former schoolhouse. Abandoned one-room schoolhouses dot the landscape of the Copper Country. They stand as "humble, sturdy icons of a simpler America".

Many kids walked or skied (the kids around Otter Lake area would ski across the lake during the winter months) to school, but some were lucky enough to have a train or a horse drawn wagon pick them up. On the horse drawn wagon there was a wood stove inside....kids would often fight to get the seat closest to the heat during those cold winter days.

The late billionaire Dr. Homer Stryker taught at a one-room schoolhouse in the Keweenaw Bay area after graduating from college. It was his first job. (Who is Dr. Stryker? Teacher turned orthopedic surgeon/inventor...ever had a cast cut off? Thank Dr. Stryker--one of his many inventions was that cast-cutting saw.)

The Copper Harbor Schoolhouse is the northernmost school in the state. The school is a charming building, proudly continuing to serve the children and the community of Copper Harbor--going on 170 years!

The Houghton County Historical Museum in Lake Linden, Michigan brought the Traprock Valley one-room schoolhouse onto museum property in 1983. The museum is situated on 15 acres, on the shores of Torch Lake.

The Rathbone School in Eagle Harbor, Michigan proudly served the community from the early 1850s to 1873. It's a popular location for pilgrimages; members of the Knights of Pythias make trips to see the place, their founder, Justus Rathbone, came up with their secret organization's foundation while teaching here at the school.

The historic Pelkie Grade School is located in the small town of Pelkie, Michigan. The building was used as a one-room schoolhouse until 1932. It then served as a community hall until 1979 when the Sturgeon Valley Historical Society began restoration of the schoolhouse, turning it into a museum.

In 1919, there were 190,000 operating one-room schools in the U.S., with approximately 7,200 one-room schools being in Michigan. Now, there are fewer than 400 in the U.S. and 23 one-room schoolhouses in Michigan.

Very proud of all the teachers and students who went to these types of schools. Yoopers learned well in many venues. Pretty smart kids. 👏🇺🇸👍😀

The page of the Pelkie grade school book shows my dad and his sister as very young students.

My wife's uncle drove the team of horses that pulled the school wagon, I believe his name was Leonard Paananen.

I attended Copper Harbor School for eight grades and my aunt taught at the Traprock School when she first started teaching.

I wish the Central Mine school were still standing because I bet it was big by comparison to these.

Wonderful old info.

So did my dad, grandpa and so on.. classic midwest saying. I still tell my kids that..they laugh

Thank you for the history lesson.

Such a nice old schoolhouse. ❤

My Dad had to do the same thing 😄

Thanks for the info!

Love this!

Fantastic

Very cool

My mom went to a one room school house that was still there in the 70's but long gone. It was near the Gay road, but I think it was a road over, going up the hill.
