School's in session! The Pelkie One-Room Schoolhouse was built in 1909. This is the last one-room schoolhouse out of the 17 that existed in Baraga County. The building was used as a one-room school until 1932 and later served as a community hall. In 1979, the Sturgeon Valley Historical Society began restoration of the schoolhouse. They have done a phenomenal job making necessary repairs, upgrades, collecting original pieces & photographs, cleaning & volunteering their time to open the schoolhouse up for tours.

Preserved artifacts include a horse-drawn school bus on the property that has a wood stove inside to keep the children warm; the original attendance sheets; drawings & initials carved into the desks by students; the tests students had to take to pass (could you pass?); the scrapbooks filled with photos & stories; school bell; a dunce hat; and old toys found beneath the school. There's so much to see here!

They had a champion hockey team called the Dairymen who were fierce rivals with Calumet. The ice rink was just down the road from the school.

There are only 2 more Sundays left before they close for the season! They will be open 11am-4pm on September 22nd & 29th. They'll reopen Memorial Day weekend.

The Bammert Blacksmith Shop is located in Phoenix, Michigan.
Donated to the Keweenaw Historical Society in 1998 by the grandsons of blacksmith Amos Bammert, the shop was built in the 1880s at the Cliff Mine location and moved to Phoenix in about 1906. Amos, born in 1863, operated the shop until his death in 1940.

Blacksmiths were in high demand in the early days of copper mining, as horse-drawn carriages and wagons were the principal means of land transportation until the arrival of railroads in the early 1900s.

Interested in learning more about the art of being a blacksmith? On September 27th, at the Calumet Art Center's Big Green Church will be a class taught by Kris Southerland of Copper Island Forge. For cost/registration please see: www.keweenaw.info/event-detail/introduction-to-blacksmithing-with-kris-southerland-of-copper-isla...

For want of a nail, the horse was lost. For want of a horse, the rider was lost. For want of a rider, the battle was lost. For want of a battle, a kingdom was lost. A kingdom was lost, all for the want of a horseshoe nail!

I've read that once the cliff mine was closed that they moved a lot of the buildings to Phoenix. I just cant help but immagine how much of an undertaking it must have been to move a building in those days. Probably piece by piece but still.

Hancock, Michigan is home to Finlandia University, the only remaining university in North America founded by Finnish immigrants. Driving through Hancock you'll notice a few street signs in both English and Finnish, a nod to their rich heritage. Go out for breakfast at the Suomi Bakery & Restaurant in downtown Houghton or the Kaleva in Hancock and get told the special is pannukakku...panna-whatta?

The Finnish language has one of the most phonetic writing systems in the world, but grammar is a completely different game!

Do you have trouble with any Finnish words or curious if you've been saying something correctly?

I make it a couple of times each year. They even make it in South Dakota.

Love it, my grandparents ran the kaleva after they immigrated from Finland! I always loved hearing their story, they lived the true American dream 🇫🇮🇺🇸
