"Oldest Person In The Nation Dies At 123 Years Old In Houghton, Michigan"

On this day, 72 years ago, headlines across the country announced the death of Mamie Nelson of Houghton, Michigan, 123 years old. 123?! Yes, 123 years old.

According to Mamie, she lived through 29 U.S. Presidents, Civil War, assassination of President Lincoln, the sinking of the Titanic, World War I & II, etc.

But you see nobody actually knows how old Mamie was when she died. Throughout the many interviews she conducted during her later years, her "memories" were vivid and fairly accurate. There was no internet to search up details/dates...so she would have either had to have been recalling memories or stories she heard...and then remembered in great detail for decades upon decades.

She told about seeing Queen Victoria, her many travels across the Atlantic with her father, and more local historical ties---the fire in Hancock in 1869 and when her house burned to the ground during the fire of 1887 in Lake Linden.

Mamie and her husband Carl had 16 children. Tragically, only two survived past childhood. Carl was known as 'the pasty man'. He sold the hot meat pasties at train stations. Carl passed away at around age 89 in 1925. Mamie continued living at their home at 123 Hancock Street, becoming a local...then regional celebrity with her advancing age and incredible stories.

Looking back at census reports, her age jumps around a bit, but this wasn't entirely uncommon for census reports. Was she born, as she said countless times, February 3, 1825 in Ireland?

Mamie passed away on February 25, 1948....only a few weeks after celebrating her 123rd birthday with a beautiful cake and photo session.

Kind of ironic that her address was the same numbers as her age when she passed 😉 She was definitely blessed with a long life 😊

How cool. The stories she must have told. Incredible!!

I can’t begin to imagine having 16 children and only two live to see adulthood . What heartaches she must have endured .

Oh wow! Rest In Peace 🙏❤️

That’s a long time. God bless her.

Thank you that great story❤

I'm sure it was to be expected.

More about Mamie from the Michigan Tech Archives blog: blogs.mtu.edu/archives/2019/03/08/flashback-friday-young-at-heart/

Had a cousin in Chatham MI that lived to 105. Cannot remember name. She was on my mom's side. Died in early 1960s. There is a picture of her.

May she rest in peace

Doesn't look a day over 110

Western U.P. Snowmobile Trail Report February 26, 2020

Gogebic Range Trail Authority – Snowmobile & ORV Club Trail Report
Groomers were out last night reporting excellent conditions along trail 2 Ironwood to Marenisco and lake Gogebic. Bessemer to Wakefield is icy, but thanks to the new reroute riders won’t see much of an issue. We need some snow in there, which looks to come later this week/today. All in all we survived the warm-up VERY well and riders should have excellent riding this week and weekend, minus some short sections around towns.

Groomer Report

While the warm-up this weekend was not what was ordered – it was nice to see the sunshine – but now – it can go away Groomers have been doing a great job all season at keeping our trails and the Lake Gogebic Area trails held up amazingly well throughout the weekend. Our temps drops into single digits mid—week with snow in the forecast. Groomers have and will continue to be out nightly. We still have tons of snow and more than a 3’ base. This was a bump and we rode it out well. Enjoy a great week of riding in the Lake Gogebic Area where “you are a stranger only once”!
