Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 02/26

Conditions as of Monday, February 26, 2019

Snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are in fair to good condition. The blizzard filled in many of the trails. Most trails will need to be opened by a groomer not pulling a drag. So, it will take a few days for all our trails to be fully restored to their optimal conditions. The groomers are out please watch for them. They have the right of way.

Trail 120 and 121 that goes around Freda is closed for the season and will not be reopened, as well as Trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden. You can still get to Dollar Bay by way of Hancock and to Lake Linden by way of Calumet. Trail 133 is closed for the season for logging.

ON MARCH 1, 2 AND 3, THE COPPERDOG SLEDDOG RACE WILL BE TAKING PLACE ON SELECT SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN THE KEWEENAW. TRAILS WILL NOT BE CLOSED FOR THE RACE, SO WE ASK THAT YOU TRAVEL WITH EXTRA CAUTION IN AREAS WHERE THE RACE IS GOING ON.

Please stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

FEBRUARY 25

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via John Dee Snow Central – Information is traveling rather slow up here because of the storm. Many folks have spent the entire morning just trying to get out of their house or driveway.

Anyway, I spoke with our groomer boss and he said all but himself and another operator were still snowed in as of late this morning. Yesterday, the groomer boss had use a groomer without a drag to go and rescue a stuck groomer/drag out in the bush.

No grooming is going on until tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb 26th) morning.

Because of the amount of snow and the 70 mph+ winds, trails will need to be opened up by a groomer without a drag and then can be hit with a groomer and drag. So it will take a few days for all trails in our system to get back up to full speed.

Those heading out to ride today and tonight should exercise caution, as there are many sections impassable by a trail-sled at the moment.

-John
