Newberry Trail Report – 01/10

Jan. 10 2019

Newberry area and north received 8 inches to 12 inches of snow yesterday. All of our trails have wet areas so please be careful due to the warm temperatures. The trail between CR 500 and the Tahquamenon Falls will not be groomed until we get colder temperatures to freeze the swamp.

Trail #9 Good condition.

Trail #45 Fair condition. This trail is groomed to County Road 500. Please be careful between M-123 and Skyline Road the road was graded this past fall and it has a crown in the middle that is causing problems for the groomer drivers until we get more snow. There is drop off on each side of the grade.

Trail #2/9 Good condition but there is still open water holes on this trail.

There is a car parked in our staging area ( by the railroad tracks in Newberry) since last weekend that is in the way for plowing and for trucks and trailers to park this weekend. If anyone knows who this car belongs please call the TASA barn at 906-293-3063 and leave a message

Sometimes you just have to take a chance...and get off the beaten path. I had decided to head back to the trailer and not wait for the sunset on Seney National Wildlife Refuge...since I was going to be up at 5:00am to get back there for the sunrise. I took the long way back and was so glad I did. I found three sandhill cranes on a ridge. I stopped and just watched them. Two of them seemed to be a pair...not sure if they wanted to associate with the loner. Finally I noticed their body language...they were going to fly. I got on them and caught them lifting off and flying. The best part...they decided to curve and fly right in front of me!!! I just had time to pull back on my zoom to snap them. 🙂 The setting sun gave that perfect golden glow to the scenery. ... See MoreSee Less

Matching water and sky, the sunrise at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan welcomes the new day in style. Photographer Teresa McGill took an early morning hike and was delighted by the fiery sky and the calm reflecting waters. Summer moments at Seney National Wildlife Refuge present chances to hear the loons and see many types of turtle, osprey fishing in ponds, waterfowl defending their territory, otters playing or dam-building beavers. If you want to see wildlife, especially birds, this is the place. Photo courtesy of Teresa L. McGill. ... See MoreSee Less

It was chilly morning on the river the other day. 48 degrees and a slight wind. Water temp has been fluctuating between 61 and 69 degrees, turning the bite on and off. Top waters are just starting to come into play but most of the action is coming from spinners. We were able to put a 28" tiger in the boat for a quick photo and release. #10 for the season. ...
