Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 01/09

Trail 11S Update: Trail has froze up well and is OPEN. Some large ice chunks remain that we hope to remove over the next week. It is being groomed today to within 3.5mi of our border with Wisconsin’s SnoBunnies Snowmobile Club trail 11. SnoBunnies trail boss said trail is mostly flat, just proceed with caution until you hit the groomed section. Groomers have been running nearly non-stop since yesterday to get the trails back in shape.

<>

Groomers were out all night reporting white out conditions most of the night with around 8" of snow as of 8am this morning. In Wakefield area at least it has snowed hard all morning long and continues to do so. Groomers will run again tonight and as much as possible. Trails are rated very good. Our President took this video this morning out his back door...Quite the tease, eh? Tons of snow in the woods yet, trails have water hazards here and there, they are WHITE and we hope to do some grooming before the weekend. Everything was hit Sunday and with low midweek traffic trails are flat! Ride cautiously, ride right & ride sober! ... See MoreSee Less

We groomed several hundred miles this past weekend, all of our system was groomed at least twice including 160 & 11S. THERE REMAINS WAIST DEEP SNOW AND A BASE OF 12-30" OF SNOW ON THE TRAILS. Water holes are back and here to stay, while there are only a few hazards like this on our trails, many are around the Wakefield area, especially near trail 2/8 intersection. Later this week the trail between Bessemer & Wakefield will get really tough, the county has removed the ditch trail to allow for proper drainage pushing riders to a complete road-route trail. We suggest trailering and ride out of Wakefield to access our eastern system. Trails were in beautiful shape this weekend and we saw many riders enjoying them, THANK YOU! There will be tons of snow in the woods for a very long time. March may run its course warm, but April could be a very different story. Stay safe sledders!

We were the guys going the other way watching this on the other side. Glad it wasn’t that bad of a crossing.

Why ride GRTA trails out of Ironwood, MI? THIS IS WHY. Club sponsor, volunteer & Groomer Operator Tim Thorn of Snow Chaser's Lodging LLP shared these pictures with us of trail 160 that were taken today. The Montreal River Gorge and Bald Mountain are stunning. Thank you Gogebic County Forestry and Xcel Energy Michigan for your land use agreements as well as they 25 private landowners to the South that get riders 20 miles north to this spot! This trail connects to Wisconsin Trail 3 creating one of the most scenic interstate trail loops available to ride! ... See MoreSee Less
