Drummond Island Trail Report – 01/09

GROOMER REPORT………….. The Groomers are both going out today!!! Because the snow was so wet we had to wait for temperatures to drop and take some of the wetness out of the snow otherwise we would do more harm to the trails than good! Our expectation is that the west end will be in decent shape.

The east end is more rocky and has more waterholes that the groomer may break through!

Stay tuned for a better report either later tonight or by morning!

Please slow down and use caution!LAKE GOGEBIC - We are following another breaking story tonight. We have received a report of a head on snowmobile accident on the north side of Lake Gogebic. Eye witnesses at the scene say the accident occurred at around 7pm central time when 2 snowmobiles traveling at a high rate of speed hit each other head on causing both snowmobiles to burst into what witnesses say was a "fireball." Attempts to revive the drivers were unsuccessful both drivers were killed at the scene. Names have not been released. An investigation is underway. Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors to that crash. ... See MoreSee Less

Yes.... it’s true! Next weekend Jan 24-26 there will be Jeeps on some of the snowmobile trails. It is a DNR approved event and will have lots of over site. The trails the Jeeps will be on are marked in YELLOW! Some are multi use trails and some are just Jeep trails. Either way you may encounter some Jeeps. Please ride with caution if you are in these areas next weekend. We want everyone to be safe! ... See MoreSee Less

I ride sleds and we jeep too but us sledders get very few weeks to ride on good groomed trails. Jeep's have months of opportunities to enjoy the trails. Just my opinion .

Here's to all the Jeepers: May you all get stuck and your driveshafts break!!

I hope they have to pay the $48 fee as well....

I feel they shouldn't ruin the trails for us sledders, we were planning on coming to sled with friends. I guess we won't now! The Jeep's have all the rest of the year to ride. It's just very sad!!😢

This is a terrible idea to set precedence with an “approved event”. Wheeled vehicles do not belong on groomed snowmobile trails except in emergencies.

Cindy the sections that are shaded yellow look like some of them are county roads to start with - like Nevanins and Glen Cove Rd; and some that aren't even snowmobile trails like Tight Twisties and the Walker trail. Out of about 80 miles of snowmobile trails, it looks like the Jeeps will only be on about 4 miles of #492/493 Reikoff Trail and 489 Turkey Ranch Trail? Is that accurate?

That’s dangerous as hell!!!! Ask me how I really feel.

How many miles can you ride a sled on the groomed trail system with out a trail permit.......? The jeeps or any vehicle should abide by the same rules.

This is TOTAL INSANITY !!!!!! WTH MIDNR ????????? Our Snowmobile Season is Short enough already ...... Now You want to endanger our Snowmobile Families MIDNR ???? Shame on You All ........ Where are Your Minds ?????????

👎🙁🙁 this will really tear the trails up.

I personally don’t like this either. Although I try to look at the positives.. I know it brings business to the Island and we all know how needed that is this time of year and lately the demand for jeepers up here is bigger than snowmobilers. I am happy it’s posted so I know to stay off the trails this weekend. Hope everyone stays safe on the trails! Happy the groomer is going after them to clean up the mess.

They tear up trails and don't put enough back in the economy. Bullshit.

BS they get the trails 8 months of the year and when we can finally ride there going let them f#*k it up for us

I can’t wait to get my Jeep up there to ride. Hope the guide takes us to some good places

Finally get some good trails to ride on the island and then this great job guys

Shouldn’t need a trail permit to ride over there then who would want to ride in big Jeep ruts not good idea

Thanks Cindy. I was not trying to start something here! I hope we see each other next week.

I am not a big fan of this either but Julie McKay Covert is correct on the amount of trail that will be shared. Plus JJUSA are very courteous and abide by the rules as well have trail guides that lead them. So if there is going to be a jeep group riding they are the ones you want.. My only concern are the ones that come up too since another group is up here. The ones that wont have the knowledge of where they can and can't ride.

This is very dangerous for snowmobilers also Why would they allow Jeeps on groomed trails. The groomers work hard to keep these trails smooth for snowmobiling not for Jeeps to tear up. We only have 1 short season to play!! Who would approve such an event??? Pray that no one gets injured. Someone needs to rethink this!

The people who opened their property for snowmobile should have a say I don’t think they signed up for jeeps

Hali August should we get a jeep at some point?

Looks like these trails are done for the yr. At less I know not to go back up there.

Once again thank you DNR!!!! We Snowmobilers pay for are trailers out of are pockets!!!! 48.00 for a trail permit each year. No State or federal taxes put stop signs out or helps keep are trailers groomed and as safe as possible for us sledders. Tire tracks on are trails are very dangerous for us sledders. So Let me say this again we pay for are trails. We are not allowed on other trails that are funded by tax dollars!!! Land owners bless they hearts allow trails on there land for us. All I can say is I think this is BULLSHIT!!!! Hopefully they have to pay something, it is the sledders money used for the groomers the gas, the time are wonderful drivers do for us. SO MAKE THEM PAY FOR THAT!!!
