Michigan Trail Report

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/06

We have a winter weather advisory in effect for today until noon. They are calling for 2-4 inches of new snow with the western areas getting a possible 6 inches. Temps will be in the teens today and Friday with single digits at night. This will start to help with freezing our wet areas.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority – reports conditions are poor. Expect early season riding.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay Crossing has been packed and panned and is in fair condition. From Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield is poor. There is water flowing between Blackjack and Indianhead Mountain. Wakefield to Marenisco is poor and has not been rolled.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing is poor and has not been rolled.

Trail 160 is closed

Trail 11S – from Wakefield to Winchester, WI is poor. This section has some deep water holes and lots of mud.

Trail 11N Wakefield to South Boundary Rd is closed indefinitely.

Gogebic Area Grooming – reports conditions are poor. Groomers were out on the East side of Lake Gogebic from Bergland to the Root Cellar Trail 13 and also on Trail 1 from Marenisco to the Ojibway Rd. Groomers are trying to pack and freeze down the wet areas. The railroad grade is rideable but very low on snow. Most swamps and water crossings are still open. Expect early season riding

Watersmeet U P Thunder Riders reports conditions are poor. The trails are officially open. Please ride with caution it is early season riding. We will be out as soon as there is enough snow to start packing a base.

Groomer VOLUNTEER OPERATOR Steve G. took this video grooming trail 2 from Blackjack Road east to Indianhead Mountain late last Friday night. This section is often the roughest by 3pm Saturday and it starts every Saturday looking like this! We had both groomers go down this weekend, but only for a few hours due to excellent teamwork and urgency by GRTA volunteers. Still we got behind and the ridiculous amounts of snow make the task of getting them flat...and keeping them flat...very difficult. Several rounds of snow forecast this week, start planning your backpack interstate snowmobile trip! Conditions like this don't come around often and as GRTA Club Member "Tinger" says, "Ride like it's going to be 60 degrees tomorrow!!" #groomeroperatorsneeded #volunteertoday #snowmobile #trail #riding #gosnowmobiling #thinksnow #westerngateway #up

CAUTION!!! TRAIL #2 25 miles west of Watersmeet The water spot has grown, we are working to get it filled and froze over. Please use caution! Our driver worked very hard trying to make this a safe crossing. Came close to tipping the groomer over. Thank you Jack!! ... See MoreSee Less

What’s causing this. Beaver dam?

Scott Zywicki

We came through here Friday, and it was bad. Came up on it with no warning. Pink ribbon on each side of the hazard is not an adequate means of warning folks of this hazard. Why isnt there a caution ahead sign on each side of this water hole?

Pallets work well and still allow water to flow.

Jarrod Boesen

Steve Koch watched him pull out of it!

What are you filling with?

This was what it looked like at 11:34 last night. Dangerous for sure. Glad that the people that were in my group did not have any issues. Hope that it gets repaired before anyone gets hurt. Stay safe out there!

Brent Bublitz

Fill it with bales of straw. Will hold up groomer and sleds and freeze. Seen it done a few times. Just an idea.

My wife and i came through here on Saturday and it is a dangerous spot for sure, and by the looks of it there had already been a couple crashes there, and a couple sent into the trees. Thank you for marking with the signage. We were heading east stopped about 10 yards before the hole, and oncoming traffic didn't see the spot until the last minute due to the fact that it at the end of the curve. Which caused them to get close to hitting us after they went through. So thank you and keep up the good work.

Came across today in front of the groomer...yikes for sure!

Is this somewhere between Rogers Bar and US- 2

Is this somewhere between Roger Bar and west to US- 2 or Watersmeet and Rogers Bar? Plannig to head to Rogers form Marinesco but wont be if I have to go through that.
