Michigan Trail Report

Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 11/29

Below is a high contrast view of US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan snow depth map, we do have more snow than the Keweenaw at this point, but not by much.

Some spots we can attest have more snow (around the Wakefield area) but with the wet fall the amount of water moving makes trail conditions change rapidly and profoundly. It will be a struggle to make it around on our trails this weekend as there will be endless mud holes, running water and warm temps.

Also please be aware Iron County and Vilas County Wisconsin both will be closed this weekend, so the interstate trail system will not be open yet. Next weekend…looks a heck of a lot better! We’ll update tomorrow again and please join our club, like our page AND GET INVOLVED! There is active logging along trail 2 just outside of Wakefield and some late season trail repair projects have also eat up some snow pack at several locations across the system. #allvolunteer #volunteergroomeroperators #seekinggroomeroperators

Gogebic Range Trail Authority - ORV & Snowmobile Club

GRTA groomer operator Steve G. took a video of him grooming back to Bessemer from Wakefield late last night. The ski hill section is in better shape than we imagined, but there are several icy spots. We'll see how much traffic the trails have today/tomorrow, hopefully weekday guys can go easy and not rip the trails up. We'll be out tonight/tomorrow night to try and give our weekend warriors the best trails possible. #allvolunteer #GRTA ... See MoreSee Less

12/12/18 Facebook Trail Report:
*Be sure to view our MSA Trail Report: msasnow.org/trail-reports/grta/ *

We are trying to be as honest and up front about trail conditions as we know so many of you drive such a long ways to ride. It's mid week and trail conditions are holding steady, surprisingly. Things can change quickly with bright sun and 35+ degrees, but we'll keep you updated. Right now, riding this weekend may be feasible, but we'll know more Friday. We just got word 2019 maps are in and will hopefully get them available this weekend.

Trail 160: Groomed yesterday, final 6 miles being groomed today. The southern 5-8 miles is poor with many icy spots and lots of rocks. The northern 1/2 of the trail is fair to good condition due to elevation, more lake effect fell in that area. The trail from Crestview to Norlund is poor, Crestview to spring lane is also poor due to water draining from the wet fall/summer yet. Spring Lane to Lake Road was not bad, but many downed trees removed. Lake road to Sunset road was fair. Sunset road to Airport road is quite rocky, need more snow. Airport road to Northstar road is fair. Northstar road to Vanderhagen road fair. Norlund road and north is fair.

Trail 2 from Bessemer to Wakefield: Overall fair, with some poor sections and some excellent sections. We continue to cross at the Ramsay Crossing intersection until the new reroute can be opened. Prospect road ditch trail is not groomed per agreement with Road Commission who helped facilitate the reroute. The trail from Blackjack road to Indianhead is very icy from freezing it down with no new snow. On top of Indianhead descending to Wakefield is good condition with some icy corners. Once down the hill near Wakefield the trail is icy due to running water yet and lack of snow to carry over it.

Due to the weight of our New Holland Tractor we are not using it right now to keep the ice cover intact and water holes froze over. See picture captions for locations.

For the idiot that drove his sled through our pond, you are lucky you didn't fall through that slush. You are the reason trails get closed.

Shout out to Chris U. for taking the lead on our equipment maintenance. He dropped our skags on the drag last night ahead of our groomer operator meeting. We are so thankful for all our volunteers, we cannot do this without them. #lucky #blessed #thankthevolunteers ... See MoreSee Less

We had a good groomer operator kick off meeting last night, pictured is trail 2 off Curry Street in Ironwood. The trail is in good to excellent condition, corners are just starting to get icy, but they are covered again after tonight's groom. Trail conditions remain fair, but that will quickly change this week we feel. Some sections poor some excellent and water hazards still exist. We need more snow, but for what we have trails are not bad for 12/10. Condition for this weekend will be determined by traffic this week. Thank you groomer operators! This will be the third season we run an all volunteer operator crew and we are very blessed to do so as that funds so much of our operation! ... See MoreSee Less

Whatever that trail is on the North end of 64, north of gogebic, heading north. There are hidden railroad tracks that run east and west. There are no railroad ties or shot Rock to bring the area surrounding them up to grade. And of course there was no sign warning the rider of the existing railroad tracks. Early-season conditions, people look out !! Just giving people a heads up..
