Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/12

Greetings Sledders,

Very quickly, those that were in and we had a chance to talk to said they had better than expected rides. We obviously like to hear pleasantly surprised as opposed to bitterly disappointed.

Ice seems to be the general consistent topic and it will continue to be an issue until we get real snow depths or until we come to the end of this dismal season that we’ve all experienced.

We got an additional 3" over the weekend and it’s just in time for the next thaw which begins tomorrow and will last until Thursday with Wednesday being the critical day with temps in the 40’s and the Sun will be the kicker. Friday looks to be cold and we go right back into thaw mode on Saturday.

It’s anybody’s guess how we will end up especially with the Sun getting into the mix.

I groomed Saturday and the air temp was around 20 but the Sun was out and it didn’t take long before the areas on the trail that were dirty turned into mush.

Unfortunately this could be the beginning of the second ending which really hurts because the beginning of the first ending back on Jan 7th is still fresh on our minds Or something like that.

The trails continue to be fair in my mind because we still don’t have a hard pack base because of the dry snow and lots of ice underneath.

Ride Often (or in this case soon) and Please Be Safe,

Keith, Sandy and The Girls of Fay’s Motel Grayling

Greetings Sledders,

What a weekend. Two tractors vs hundreds of sleds. I'd bet on the sleds winning out every time and that certainly was the case last weekend. It took us until Monday but we got all the trails back into very good condition and it looks like they will stay that way thru Friday. After that another ride on the weather roller coaster could be headed our way. At this point it's anybody's guess as to how it will shake out.

We took the day off from grooming today to slather a little grease here and there on the tractors and we will focus on some much needed re-arrangement of snow on the corridor at the golf course that is part of the trail thru town tomorrow and we will be back at grooming on Friday. We will be back at our usual weekend schedule unless the weather says otherwise.

LOVELLS TRAIL CLOSURE: The military will be closing the gates on the Lovells trail the first two weekends of March. This closure is due to training activity on what is known as the Range 30 MPRC and the gates block off a safety zone that is meant to keep everyone out of harms way. I will post this alert several times between now and the scheduled weekends.

Next report when we have a better idea what to expect for weather for the weekend.

Greetings Sledders,

If we get what is forecast, which by the looks of things we will, or at least come close, the trails should end up in good to very good condition.

Groomers are running full bore and will continue throughout the weekend.

This should prove to be the best riding of the year, plenty of snow to keep you off the ice base and the timing is great. Any snowfall on an early week day gives us plenty of time to compress and compact before the weekend traffic hits.

Gotta Go!!

Greetings Sledders,

We are grooming and I still think that and after getting a first hand look at the local trails as well as the trails further north that a poor rating is accurate to the south and a fair rating works further north, say north of Frederic.

I haven't been on the trail south of M-72 but I did take a look during the thaw and it didn't look good.

There's a little snow in the forecast and even a couple of inches will help.

Greetings Sledders,

Well here we go again, another gut punch just when we were dialed in with some very nice conditions.

Too much warmth and humidity followed by too much rain and we are back to icy conditions.

To add insult to injury we had a breakdown Friday night and two and a half days were wasted chasing our tails trying to determine the cause. Is it a fuel issue, something mechanical, or is it a random electrical problem. Electrical it was and it took a tech from the dealership all day Monday to track it down and repair.

We are now back to 100%. So we wait.

We got about an inch overnight and I did a test run to see if we could possibly go out and iron out some of the moguls that were left from the weekend. I had limited success with the mogul part but the real problem was dragging the snow along the icy stretches because there isn't enough surface tension to pull the snow through the drag. So we wait.

The forecast doesn't look all that promising with freezing rain tomorrow and no measureable snowfall until next week. So we wait.

I'll get another report out as soon as conditions look to improve or if I should get tired of waiting and decide to write one for the hell of it.

Ride as soon as we get snow as it may not last long,
