Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/12

Greetings Sledders,

Very quickly, those that were in and we had a chance to talk to said they had better than expected rides. We obviously like to hear pleasantly surprised as opposed to bitterly disappointed.

Ice seems to be the general consistent topic and it will continue to be an issue until we get real snow depths or until we come to the end of this dismal season that we’ve all experienced.

We got an additional 3" over the weekend and it’s just in time for the next thaw which begins tomorrow and will last until Thursday with Wednesday being the critical day with temps in the 40’s and the Sun will be the kicker. Friday looks to be cold and we go right back into thaw mode on Saturday.

It’s anybody’s guess how we will end up especially with the Sun getting into the mix.

I groomed Saturday and the air temp was around 20 but the Sun was out and it didn’t take long before the areas on the trail that were dirty turned into mush.

Unfortunately this could be the beginning of the second ending which really hurts because the beginning of the first ending back on Jan 7th is still fresh on our minds Or something like that.

The trails continue to be fair in my mind because we still don’t have a hard pack base because of the dry snow and lots of ice underneath.

Ride Often (or in this case soon) and Please Be Safe,

Keith, Sandy and The Girls of Fay’s Motel Grayling

Shroomers,

Here's the weekend update. Neal (the tamale man), Dawn and a new crew were in over the weekend. It was cold and rainy. They did pick 150 or so decent blacks.

Our gentleman from Indiana is in looking for whites (yellows, commons). He times his trip north based on his season down south. Didn't work out so good this year.
It's a bit early. He has found 100 or so small to good sized grays. If he stays long enough the whites will start. It has been a strange season this year.

Temps look to finally get and stay in the 60's and 70's all week. We'll see what that brings. Could be picking about every color shroom there is.

We will let you know.

Shroomers,

Best get something out to you all. They're here!!

We were not able to get out last weekend, however Neal (the tamale man), Dawn and some of their crew were in
and found 150. My hunter from Hastings found 90+. All were blacks, most on the smaller side with some good sized.
Neal's group does now hold the record for the smallest perfectly formed mushroom. The size of a hat pin head.

It was fairly cool last weekend, not so great hunting weather. Day temps this week are to be in the mid 60's with night time temps
the mid 40's. Calling for some rain Wed, Thur and Fri. This should keep them going. Should be a great weekend.

We'll get out this week and we will let you know what's happening.

Eager Shroomers,

Keith and I took a quick walk on the edge of the woods.

Things are starting to look promising. Catkins are on, Tiger Lilies are blooming and Trilliums are up and setting buds. Good moisture in the soil.
Now all we need are some shrooms. Didn't find any, not even Keith's usual babies.

Day time temps are supposed to be in the high 40's to high 50's with night time temps to be only in the high 30's. Could use a bump in the night
time temps. The weather gurus are calling for rain tomorrow and than again on Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully this will get things going.

As always, we'll keep you informed.

Eager Shroomers,

Time to fire up this report and start the hunt for the elusive northern fungi.

We made it through the winter. Had decent snow for a change. First time in 3 years.

Took a quick drive out to one of our usual picking sites today. There are still snow banks on the edges of some of the roads.

As to what's going on, catkins are coming on, tiger lilies are setting buds and trillium are just starting to come come up.

Daytime temps are to be in the low 50's till the weekend with overnight temps in the high 30's and some rain most days.

We'll check again over the weekend and keep you informed.
