Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/07

Greetings Sledders,

Trail conditions are about what I thought they might be with the limited snow and light recent traffic. I checked basically all of the crossings this morning and all are snow covered albeit thin. Had we gone out and panned the snow that we did get the trails would be even thinner and probably no better than a poor rating, right now I would continue to consider them rideable but fair overall. It’s difficult to upgrade to good without a real base and the only base that’s there is a result of sled traffic, as planned.

In the last report I indicated that I would publish the grooming schedule for the weekend, but I’ve changed my mind, just kidding.

We are going to groom this weekend with one objective in mind and that is to keep roughness caused by increased traffic in check. This is not a base building grooming exercise by any means and if there wasn’t a desire to get people the best possible ride that we can with the limited snow that we have to work with I wouldn’t be sending them out at all. After all this might be last weekend for awhile based on the weather forecasts that I’m looking at.

We’ve only picked up a dusting or two since last Saturday’s snowfall and dustings seem to be the new norm. I wonder how many dustings there are in an inch. Are those fluffy dustings or compressed ones.

Tired Shroomers,

What a year it wasn't. Time to bring this disappointing year to an end. Not sure it ever really started. Worst year ever for mushrooming.

Had some shroomers in over the weekend and also had a couple former customers stop in, no one was finding anything, however
our shroomer from Ohio has found a 100 or so nice grays and smaller whites. Finally got good rain yesterday, so the
whites should really start to pop.

Temps are going to stay hot (80's) until Thursday with rain also predicted then.

Have a great year. Pray for a better year next year.

Shroomers,

Okay, here's the tale of mushrooming this week. You tell me if you can make any sense of it!!

You know about our 2 on Wednesday. Neal, the tamale man (with tamales in hand-thank you very much), Dawn and a few friends were in over the weekend.
They found about 4 dozen blacks. Hard picking. Rained most of the day Saturday. Under growth is in full bloom. However they did better than any one else though.
All others didn't find any. We went out this afternoon to a small spot that's maybe 40' by 40'. It has no ground cover other than leaves. We picked 4 dozen decent sized blacks.
Go figure. Plan on enjoying half tonight fried in my trusty cast iron skillet.

What this week will bring is anyone's guess. I have a customer in at the end of the week to pick yellows (white, sponges). Would usually be well into them by this date.
The way this year has gone though who knows.

Not supposed to get any rain till next weekend with good temps.

We'll let you what's going on with the great mushroom tale.

Shroomers,

Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms out there.

This is a second hand report. We were to busy all week to get out. We trust the source though. Neal (the tamale man), Dawn and crew were in over the week end.
Pickings were pretty slim. They found only about a dozen small blacks. They said Tiger Lilies are blooming and Trilliums buds have not opened yet. Seems to be
maybe a week early.

Based on temp forecasted for the week this weekend should be much better. What a strange year!

I promise we will get out to the woods this week and let you know what's going on.

Shroomers,

Finally got back out to the woods. Sorry we took so long. Two days late and a few dollars short as usual.

The snow is gone out of the wood. A few dirty snow banks along some roads.

Things are moving along. Tiger Lilies are blooming and Trillium are setting buds. A few leaves but no catkins yet which is odd. They usually come before the Trilliums.
There is good moisture under the leaves. After saying all that we did not find one elusive fungi. Not even Keith's thumb tack sized baby.

Temp today is in the 80's and dropping back to the mid to high 50's the rest of the week and into the weekend. Supposed to get rain Wed. into Thur. than again on Fri. and into Sat.

With all that said when the fungi will pop is still a bit up in the air. Mushroom season seems to be going the same as winter and spring has.....All askew!!

We will try to get out to the woods later in the week. Will let you know what's going on.
