Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/07

Greetings Sledders,

Trail conditions are about what I thought they might be with the limited snow and light recent traffic. I checked basically all of the crossings this morning and all are snow covered albeit thin. Had we gone out and panned the snow that we did get the trails would be even thinner and probably no better than a poor rating, right now I would continue to consider them rideable but fair overall. It’s difficult to upgrade to good without a real base and the only base that’s there is a result of sled traffic, as planned.

In the last report I indicated that I would publish the grooming schedule for the weekend, but I’ve changed my mind, just kidding.

We are going to groom this weekend with one objective in mind and that is to keep roughness caused by increased traffic in check. This is not a base building grooming exercise by any means and if there wasn’t a desire to get people the best possible ride that we can with the limited snow that we have to work with I wouldn’t be sending them out at all. After all this might be last weekend for awhile based on the weather forecasts that I’m looking at.

We’ve only picked up a dusting or two since last Saturday’s snowfall and dustings seem to be the new norm. I wonder how many dustings there are in an inch. Are those fluffy dustings or compressed ones.

Greetings,

Not my typical intro I'll admit, but there's not much sledding going on in this area right now, or from what the forecast is showing, in the immediate future either.

According to said forecast in the next 10 days 3 are supposed to be just marginally below freezing, 2 are looking like rain and the rest are Sunny. There's nothing that looks remotely like weather that will repair the damages done by yesterday's blast furnace.

There's lots of dirt showing at all of the crossings and water is beginning to pond as well. Wish I had better news but it is what it is and unfortunately wishing hasn't done so pretty good this year.

Time to move a groomer away from my shop door and replace it with one of the Walleye boats in order to get ready for a season that is generally more reliable than our recent Winters.

We will kick out another report to either sign off or let you know if we get a significant snow event.

Greetings Sledders,

Very quickly, those that were in and we had a chance to talk to said they had better than expected rides. We obviously like to hear pleasantly surprised as opposed to bitterly disappointed.

Ice seems to be the general consistent topic and it will continue to be an issue until we get real snow depths or until we come to the end of this dismal season that we've all experienced.

We got an additional 3" over the weekend and it's just in time for the next thaw which begins tomorrow and will last until Thursday with Wednesday being the critical day with temps in the 40's and the Sun will be the kicker. Friday looks to be cold and we go right back into thaw mode on Saturday.

It's anybody's guess how we will end up especially with the Sun getting into the mix.

I groomed Saturday and the air temp was around 20 but the Sun was out and it didn't take long before the areas on the trail that were dirty turned into mush.

Unfortunately this could be the beginning of the second ending which really hurts because the beginning of the first ending back on Jan 7th is still fresh on our minds Or something like that.

The trails continue to be fair in my mind because we still don't have a hard pack base because of the dry snow and lots of ice underneath.

Ride Often (or in this case soon) and Please Be Safe,

Greetings Sledders,

We've seen some improvement in conditions and as near as I can tell from the crossings I'd say we are at a solid fair South and I have to think maybe a tad better North.

We didn't get enough snow to fire up the groomers yet. There are times when it's better to let sled traffic lay down the snow and without getting into details, this is one of those times.

Depth of snow is only one driver of the decision to groom, the other is traffic which we will be watching throughout the week and we will likely groom this coming weekend as a result.

There isn't much in the way of new snow in the forecast so what we've got is it for awhile. Go figure.

I will let you know what the grooming schedule is going to be later in the week but plan on Friday and Saturday nights as of right now
