Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 12/22
Let it Snow!!!! We had about 3 to 4 inches of new fluffy lake effect overnight. Not the kind of snow we want but the good side is the weatherman is calling for lake effect everyday thru next Thursday. So while I wouldn’t say we will get ultimate riding conditions it looks like you will be able to get some riding in. At least what we did have has hardened up to help create the base we need. I went to Gaylord late yesterday afternoon and was surprised that I did see 5 sleds that were out and about including 2 that were stopped right on the railroad tracks at the south end of Otsego Lake. That would be a $300 ticket for just setting where they were at. Riders need to realize where the tracks are and to stay away from them. So lets hope the snow keeps coming and make us all happy. Also I do have vacancy between Christmas and new years at my Wayside Inn Cottage at Lake Margrethe and I have one 10 x 24 indoor storage unit open at my storage facility including a lot of room for outdoor trailer parking with 24 hour access……Lets just hope the snow keeps coming. I was very happy to see that my post from yesterday is really making its way around with a lot of people reading it and making people think twice about the consequences. Thanks for checking in and Please Ride Safely. Pete

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~ A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey~OUTDATED~

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Frederic is a cloudy ghost town so far this saturday morning. No one around and 31 degrees. Surprisingly we had about an inch and a half of pebbly sleet/snow yesterday. I only saw 2 groups of 3 sleds and one group of 2 all day yesterday. 3 of those sleds are pictured below and they were the only ones yesterday. Looks like we might get some snow the beginning of the week. The riders from yesterday were happy to be out but its hard out there. I met a youngster in town this morning from St Henry Ohio who is a regular rider. I didnt get his name. but its great to see young people wanting to ride. Thats about it for today, just waiting to see who stops by. So far no one. Thanks for checking in. Pete #gaylord#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> An impactful storm system will move into Michigan Sunday into early next week, with accumulating snow, strong winds, and blowing snow. The best chances for heavy snow will be across the Upper Peninsula, and the snow belts of lower Michigan. Rain will likely mix in for portions of lower Michigan during the day on Sunday before transitioning to snow during the Sunday night into Monday time frame. There is still uncertainty in snow amounts and the intensity of the storm system, so be sure to check back for updates! #miweather #gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyAn impactful storm system will move into Michigan Sunday into early next week, with accumulating snow, strong winds, and blowing snow. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> 30 years ago this would have been the start of hell week. GM, Chrysler, & Ford would all be closed up and thousands would flock north for winter break and fun in the snow. Well fast forward from that 30 years ago and its pretty darn lonely here now. Sleet coming down this morning and a marginal amount of snow. It used to be so much different with snow in Frederic compared to Grayling. Forcast isnt looking great for this week either. I did see a few sleds out on Christmas eve day and the pic below of the 3 of them over at the swamp. Nothing so far today and its 11 a..m and 29 degrees. So it looks like I will get a few t.v. shows in this week. Stop by and say Hi if you do make it up or just wake me up if you catch me taking a nap. youtu.be/dCwgYCMq11g?si=mey8eKZMbZyscZJg

Discussion The north side of the low will have much colder air, and the deformation zone for this event will be set up across the eastern UP and Lake Superior region. Totals greater than 1" of snow (some melting) will be confined north of M-55 to the Mackinac Bridge, while totals closer to the 3"+ mark are confined from St. Ignace up to Paradise and Sault Ste. Marie. Additionally, the Keweenaw Peninsula also may see the highest snowfall totals too.
You may have noticed that we added a new color for this event only. Because there is a gradual change from rain to snow... freezing rain, and even sleet is expected with this event. Sleet is like the shared sibling between snow and freezing rain. Sleet is snow that melted to rain really high up immediately after falling from the clouds, but spent enough time in the cold sector after melting to reform into tiny pellets. Freezing rain, however, forms when there isn't enough time for the rain to reform back into those tiny ice pellets due to that warm sector close to the ground, but because the ground itself IS a cold sector, it freezes on contact. Yes, sleet is slippery, but due to its properties, it's not quite as impactful. Still, because of the sleet's size, it accumulates in tenths of an inch similar to snow instead of hundredths like freezing rain. As a result, much of the white trace-1" corridor will likely fall as <1" of both snow and sleet. Again, not a huge amount, but worth mentioning. Timing for this snowfall will be similar to that of the ice. Anytime from 6 am EST Friday through the end of the day Friday is the expected duration.
Winter weather advisories are now in effect for the eastern UP regarding this snowfall. We will have traffic impact maps and timing maps coming later this afternoon after our Christmas morning activities. See you all back here soon!
