Michigan Trail Report

Ironwood Trail Report – 12/06

Trail 2 from Hurley, WI to Bessemer, MI was rolled last night with 6″ of snow packed down to get the freezing started. Our crew is heading out shortly to roll the trail from Bessemer, MI to Wakefield, MI. Tomorrow or Tonight yet we will roll Trail 8 up towards Bergland where we turn around at the M28 highway crossing. Following that will be Trail 2 to Marenisco, 11S and Trail 160. Trails are extremely hazardous with water canyon’s carving across the trail beds (record breaking rain received Monday ahead of this LES) and nothing is really froze. But we are working as fast as possible to fix that! It has snowed all morning and 8″ – 12″ is forecast today through tomorrow morning! Do your snow dance!!!

AFTERNOON UPDATE: 6-8″ has fallen today and hoping for similar amounts tonight. We are not grooming yet until trails are rolled to get them to freeze. As things continue to improve, we may be able to pan some sections this weekend!

WESTERN U.P. TRAIL REPORT via Gogebic Range Trail Authority - ORV & Snowmobile Club - These images are from Trail 8 between Wakefield, MI and Lake Gogebic. There is anywhere from 12" - 24" of snow down across our trails, all Lake Effect. It made about 2-3" base. MANY water holes uncovered and busted up or filled with snow. We're hoping the single digit temperatures over the next 36 hours tightens everything up..... #snowphotos #ironwood #westernupOur Track Inc. 2016 Tucker was out working last night with GRTA's president Steve Hamilton. These images are from Trail 8 between Wakefield, MI and Lake Gogebic. There is anywhere from 12" - 24" of snow down across our trails, all Lake Effect. It made about 2-3" base. MANY water holes uncovered and busted up or filled with snow. We're hoping the single digit temperatures over the next 36 hours tightens everything up. You can see we have already cleared some large trees (that section was cleared TWICE already, another one down....) and some spots snow has not even stuck yet. Trails are only being rolled, no grooming with drags has occurred yet, but potentially very soon! They are calling for up to 6" tonight. We need more snow! Stay tuned, we will be having a chain saw ride event this Saturday! Both rigs are out rolling right now again!! Yesterday Calvin and Deb worked on 160, Eric and Marv went to 2 other 160 areas.. Today Steve, Arden and Zack are out. Still much Storm Damage clearing to do. Think about helping out. They are your trails too. Trail 160 will complete the loop from Ironwood to Saxon to Hurley. Contact us. We need the support of the Local Businesses and Population. When you are on the GRTA trails, remember the work that goes into them for your riding pleasure. Can't wiggle our noses and BAM the trails are clear to open. If you ride, take a saw. ... We regret to write, but our trails CANNOT OPEN for this weekend. We are following suit with all Western U.P. Clubs such as Gogebic Area Grooming, North Country Snowmobile Club UP and our great friends in Hurley, WI the White Thunder Riders. Too much brushing from the recent storms is needed yet, Monday's record RAIN FALL continues to consume the snow on the trails leaving them extremely thin in spots. Some sections are in really good shape, other sections are blocked by 20" fallen trees and bottomless muck. IF YOU STILL WANT TO RIDE COME OUT TOMORROW 9AM @ GRTA GROOMER BARN FOR SNOWMOBILE BRUSHING RIDE PARTY. We are looking at GREAT forecasts and not opening this weekend will allow for hopefully incredible trail conditions next weekend. BOOK YOUR STAYS NOW! Visit our website for our members and sponsors! After rolling 2/3rds of our trails we have a lot of brushing to do. Many spots continue to consume snow, so much water is moving yet leaving much of the trail not groomable. We'll have an update tomorrow, but some of our trails are impassable and need mountains of work. Be sure to check out our brushing ride party Saturday!! ... See MoreSee Less

Do you want to get out and ride but trails are not ready yet? Well, how about come up and ride with our club to help clear our trails from the 3rd round of gale force wind powered storms. We've had 12-24" of snow fall, 8-12" forecast Friday night will make the Saturday ride a lot of fun.

DISCOUNTED LODGING FOR VOLUNTEERS OFFERED BY SPONSORS! Contact us today and we will set you up!!!

BRING: Chainsaw, otter sled, loppers/shears, yourself and a sled!

PLAN: We will dispatch teams out with club members or if you have sections you know well and want to take the lead on we can send you with your own team. The plan is to work back the snow-loaded brush that has pulled over onto the trails. Our club had completed our brushing task for the season just ahead of the October 28th storm. Since then we have logged 850+ hours rebrushing the trails. This 3rd blast we're calling for help. Come support, network with local members and have some FUN!!
