KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Vansville Bar - Well the 2018/19 snowmobile season got off to a decent start this weekend. We received some more fresh snow on Thursday and Friday that had some riders very happy to break trail on the ungroomed trails..... #keweenaw #snowphotos #mitrailreportWell the 2018/19 snowmobile season got off to a decent start this weekend. We received some more fresh snow on Thursday and Friday that had some riders very happy to break trail on the ungroomed trails. It was great to have some of our seasonal customers stop back in! We look forward to seeing more of you as the season continues to get into full swing.

I thought I would try to update regarding conditions and trail statuses ...... this will be a bit lengthy of a post..... you can also check out Keweenaw Trail Reports Facebook page for regular updates.

Trail grooming (packing and removing downed trees and brush from the heavy snow/wind) began on Friday night. Trail 3 from Mohawk to Lac La Belle Road, Mohawk to Calumet and Calumet to Hancock was groomed. Trail 3 south of the bridge to South Range was not groomed but South of South Range was groomed by Superior Snowmobile club. I believe no further grooming will be done until more snow falls. For the most part I personally rode most of these trails and they were in good “early season” condition in my personal opinion and the other riders in our group.

There are a significant amount of trails currently closed, however, due to logging, low snow cover or significant water holes that need to freeze up yet. Closed trails include Trail 3 from Lac La Belle Road north to Copper Harbor, trails 122, 124, the southern 132, 133 and 134. Hopefully these trails will all be open within a couple of weeks.....

Trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden is closed for the entire season as is Trail 120/121 (the Freda Loop) due to extreme washouts from the June storm/flood.

Trail 17 from Hancock to Calumet, Trail 3 from Calumet to Lake Linden, Trail 3 from Calumet to Lac La Belle Rd, Trail 130 ( the Eagles Loop) the southern 132 and Trail 3 south of Houghton are all open.

There is currently NOT access to cross the bridge in Houghton/Hancock. The snowmobile portion of the bridge will not be lowered and accessible until shipping season is over, hopefully very soon.

Please note we (Vansville Bar) are the only location along the trail north of Houghton/Hancock currently accessible for fuel at this time - plan any riding accordingly.

For those not as familiar with the area the trail closures mean there is currently no access to Gay and Copper Harbor(without trailering) this is a temporary situation.

You can still access Lake Linden from Trail 3, however it requires a couple blocks of road riding to get into the businesses.

You can still ride as far north as Quincy's Restaurant on trail 3 from Hancock.

You can access Lac La Belle via the southern 132 trail but Bear Belly Bar will not be open until after Christmas for food/drink and fuel. Some of the other restaurants/establishments have limited hours until after Christmas also, it is best to call ahead.

Valley Sno Drifters will be opening the Dreamland Trails this season also which will give access to Dreamland Restaurant & Bar and additional routes from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden (Trail 122), Dreamland and Gay. Please check the status of these trails before riding them early season. They are great trails to ride once they are open in addition to the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club trail system. They are a narrower trail in parts and wind through the woods with beautiful views.

Watch the snowfall reports to determine when the conditions will improve and check for trail closure/opening updates before riding.

Hopefully you are planning your trip(s) and securing lodging as once the season is in full swing things tend to book up quickly.

We look forward to seeing you all and hearing about your riding experiences. We offer snacks, frozen pizza, drinks, fuel, parts and carry out. We also sell the trail permits.

Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula

When the devastating floods hit the Copper Country over Father's Day weekend (June 15th-17th), many roads were washed out. So, this is phenomenal to see--the after photos of Houghton Canal Road! Snow-covered and all what a beautiful sight.

Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula

Tony Bukovich was born in Painesdale, Michigan in 1915. He played for the Detroit Red Wings between 1943-45. He was cut from the team in 1945 to make room on the roster for none other than.....Mr. Hockey himself...Gordie Howe!

Bukovich was also a baseball standout, having pitched in the Brooklyn Dodgers' farm system. (He had signed with not one but TWO pro teams!)

Bukovich retired from professional sports in 1948 and moved back to the Copper Country where he opened up the Red Wing Lounge. (now the Downtowner) Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, and Alex Delvecchio were just a few of his former teammates to have stopped in for a drink & to shoot the proverbial breeze.

He also became player-coach of the Portage Lake Pioneers. In seven seasons, he compiled an incredible 276 goals and 178 assists.

In the summer of 1950, Bukovich formed the Houghton Copper Sox baseball team, which went on to win five straight Upper Peninsula League championships. Bukovich passed away almost 9 years ago on December 19th, 2008 at Houghton County Medical Care Facility. When he died at age 94 he was the oldest former member of the Detroit Red Wings.

that's my uncle. the article does not mention my dad or uncle Joe, who are mentioned in many other articles. The 3 of them were known for their hockey skills, amongst other things. My Uncle Tony seems to be the most recognized of the three. Thanks for posting.

Tony was a great player, a gentleman, and a friend of my dad!! The last time I talked to him was at the houghton country medical center when he came to visit my dad just before he passed away!!! They were the epitome of true hockey players!!! God bless them both!!! Copper County Strong !!

Michael Bukovich

I remember hearing of the Bukovich's when growing up in Painesdale. David Bukovich was my age. Freda Bukovich worked in the school kitchen with my mom, Bertha Kangas.

Emily Marie

When my skates needed to be sharpened, he was the guy I went to!

Gabe Gullstrand

Tim Grams

Mark Bukovich

He was a good neighbor to our family at Twin Lakes.

Very interesting!

Met him at county medical care, good guy!

Thanks for sharing!

Sandy Manderfield

Matthew Roberts

Adam Engle

I got to know him and chatted with him several times at the KBC before he went in the nursing home.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing.
