Ontonagon Trail Report – 12/05

Trail report: Unfortunately, it rained substantially yesterday. There is standing water on many trails. It is cold today and snowing. We are starting from ground zero today. We need several days of freezing temps and 8-12 inches of snow to set trail. Very unlikely NCSC trails, with the possible exception of trails in the Porkies, will be open this weekend.

We will keep everyone posted on progress, fingers crossed hopefully next week

Here is a cautionary tale for us all. Please. please obey trail signs! Closed may not just mean, not open yet because of lack of snow or open water. It may also mean, this landowner is not ready to grant us seasonal access. We have many right of way sections due to the generosity of private landowners. This is what happens when we break the rules. Everyone loses............12/10/17 Trail Update...A Few vs 1000....

It took us true snowmobilers (the kind that volunteer to build the trails and the sport) thousands of hours to get ready for this year...Yesterday a few so called “snowmobilers” couldn’t read or pay attention to closed signs (strike 1) rode around closed signs when we do not have enough snow (strike 2) and then when asked to leave, told one of our most supportive landowners to shove it (strike 3). Now we have a CLOSED trail. We support the decision of our landowner to close this trail, temporarily or permanent as they are merely trying to safeguard their crops and enjoy their property on the last days of hunting season. Remember landowners get nothing for their troubles and in this case the grand prize was being disrespected!

We and the law cannot be everywhere to enforce the rules so if you see something say something and help us all become more respectful.

As we said yesterday...if you want to ride, head north of us towards montague area, not turin. We need more snow. As a snowmobile club we get so excited for the season, but matters like this really dampen our spirits... Also we want to thank the many snowmobilers who saw the signs and turned around, you kind of folks help keep us going!

Some people think they can do what they want, then they rueon it for every body else.

Dicks....

We have the same problem in Canada losing so many trails.

Jerks like this are going to bring heat on everyone.

Always a constant problem! We have lost or almost trails every year.

So sad.

That's a beautiful thing!

Where is this? I want to go. Can't stand looking at my old dead grass. I mean, there's six inches of snow in Texas for God's sake !!

North Country Snowmobile Club UP

We have packed and started ice/snow bridges on our entire portion of Trail #12 from Greenland to White Pine.

We will be out later today to pack White Pine west through The Porkies, so all of South Boundary Road and Lake of the Clouds Road.

Trails 101 and 13 will be packed tomorrow or Monday.

Trail #137 South of Trail #12 will remain closed until culvert repairs can be completed.

There are many areas where we have trees down and wet spots as there hasn't been enough cold weather to freeze everything. We need time for the swamps to freeze and as much help as we can get to clear downed trees/brush.

If we get the snow/cold predicted, we will be grooming later in the week aiming, fingers crossed for a Friday, December 15th opening.

For at least 4 years this sign has been vandalized in Chocolay twp and still nothing has been done anything about it even after several requests to have it fixed.

Where is this?

I see were not envolved with this, I apologize. Our township has known about it and so has the near-by DNR

We appreciate the input but we are North Country Snowmobile Club-UP in Ontonagon/White Pine, MI. We have nothing to do with Chocolay Township as it is 2-1/2 hours to our east. Please come give our system a try in the far western UP. Ride the 906!!

Thank you. I'm sure you do a great job of keeping your trails up to par

We are trying to contact The Marquette Business Development Board to inform them as I write this.

Thank you again

We have forwarded this to Travel Marquette, the tourism board for the Marquette area with this picture and your FB contact. i hope they will address this soon. Let us know if you are ever over our way! "Ride the 906!"

Thank you. I really appreciate it

Eric Hirsch
