ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 01/22 Hey Sledheads – We are day grooming in anticipation of the polar vortex descending on us. Tractor Mac is headed from White Pine to Lake of the Clouds & South Boundary Road (Trails 1 and 11) and Wyatt is grooming from the NCSC clubhouse to Greenland and back (Trail 12). Please ride right, stay warm and check your Groomer Tracker so you know where our guys are at if you are riding today. This latest system absolutely delivered, with measured totals ranging from 14 to 24 inches across the region — all depending on which ZIP code you call home. Either way, this was a game-changer snowfall for the western U.P. The result? Trails are as good as they’ve been in years. Deep base, excellent coverage, and that soft, ride-anywhere feel that makes the Porkies and Ontonagon area so special. The fresh snow bonded well, filling in old imperfections and setting us up beautifully for grooming. If cold temps stick around (and they are), we’re in a sweet spot. Expect: This is the kind of reset we wait all winter for — and right now, it’s prime time to ride the western U.P. 👉 Thinking about making a trip? The cold snap has set up the trails nicely, but some of the moguls were extremely hard and difficult to cut down last night. All trails except Trail 12 from the 137 junction to Greenland were groomed and are in good to excellent condition. Our Groomer's run 7 day's a week. Circumstances do come up where we anticipate going one direction and the exact opposite happens which result's in a section not being covered. For that we apologize, but we always recover quickly!
They're calling for warmer temps this week but really shouldn't impact grooming with temp's below freezing during evening hour's.
Do your snow dance. We'd welcome some fresh ❄️ but everything is laying down nicely and trail's are in great shape.

If this tells you anything about conditions right now — Jamis just got back from a ride and said, “Dad, that’s the best trails I’ve ever ridden on.”
And honestly? He’s not wrong.
Snow conditions remain at an epic level across the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains area. We haven’t had fresh snow in a few days, but temperatures have stayed cold enough to lock everything in. The base is solid, the trails are holding together beautifully, and grooming has them riding smooth and fast.
There’s a slight warm-up in the forecast, but don’t let that scare you. It’s not significant enough to impact the snow base in any meaningful way. The foundation we have is strong, and conditions should remain excellent.
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to ride… this is it.

1s or Ethelwood Grade is open for the remainder of the Snowmobile season.
We took a machine down today to make sure all obstacles were clear to the turnaround and Marenisco crew did the same.
