FREDERIC – GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> 12/11 It’s 26 and sunny this thursday morning in downtown Frederic. Quiet outside and not alot of riders on wednesday. You couldnt ask for better conditions. I drove up to Gaylord last nite and the sleds I saw on the trail coming at me were riding nice and smooth. Once again we had about another 4 inches of lake effect overnight. We have to be pushing about 4 feet of snow total this season. Havent seen that in a long time. I have not seen a groomer yet this season and I have seen many complaints about 679 but mostly all good reports. I didnt even take any pics yesterday so thats it for today. Thanks for checking in. Only about 2 to 3 inches of new since last night. Just had 2 sleds in here, Cameron and his friend and they want to try to head to the bridge but I told them I felt that will be a tough ride. The bridge is closed again this morning for maybe the 8th time this week. KInd of a drizzle wetness on my front windows at sledheads and the weather said supposed to be rain this afternoon. Only had 4 sleds in here yesterday and saw several over at the Swamp and about 6 over there now for breakfast. There were 4 sleds at the gas station when I got here about 10. I have the sledview.com camera up on my screen and just saw the first sled go by. Thats it, who knows what this weather will or wont bring. Heaviest snow during this time will be across the Tip of the Mitt and eastern upper Michigan. We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> 22 degrees and sunny in downtown Frederic, no new snow overnight but they say this is the calm before the storm. Had a wonderful ride yesterday with Steve and Karen from Florida and did a nice 65 mile trip. We only saw one other set of tracks all day and we broke new 6 to 8 inches of snow all day. Many calls already this morning but if you arent here now to enjoy what we have it probably. wont hold up, but wait there is more as the big storm is supposed to be tonight and tommorow but the kicker on that is it could be rain too so its a crap shoot. Also Mackinaw bridge is clossed again as of 9:10 a.m and its now 10:36. I have lost count of how many times it has been closed this week so take that into consideration. You couldnt have asked for better conditions and temp yesterday but thats in the past now and the wait is on to see what mother nature brings us next. We had lunch at Lovells and while we rode there from Frederic a group of five guys rode in that had come down from Gaylord and they said that was good too. So thats where we are at for now. It’s not often that we get to show 90% probabilities of getting 1.5 feet of snow, but that will be the case for much of our region. And the potential for significant icing has started to inch more into the far eastern UP, so we’ll need to keep an eye on that as well. I’ll provide some final updates tomorrow morning before the first impacts start to roll in. Significant snow and icing are expected/expected to continue this afternoon through tonight. 0.25”+ icing likely for parts of northern lower with localized higher icing amounts possible. This is the most likely time frame for considerable impacts to roads and infrastructure. Snow continues across the eastern U.P. and parts of far northern lower.
Colder air wraps in area-wide during the day Monday bringing an end to the icing threat across northern lower. However, lake effect snow is expected most prominently across northwest lower and eastern upper MI. Strong winds will of 45+ mph are expected with continued blizzard conditions across parts of the area. •This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state

Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.

Within the 0.25” and 0.50” zones, we expect multiple power outages along with scattered tree damage as a result of the weight of the ice and gusty winds combining. These outages may be multi-day outages, and those in these two zones should take necessary precautionary actions to ensure you are ready.
Outside of the heaviest ice accretion, near impossible travel should be expected due to icing and heavy snow that may blow around.
Speaking of blowing around, winds will be gusting between 40-50mph across northern lower Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. This will aide in further worsening of tree damage and power outages.
The WORST of the freezing rain occurs Sunday evening and continues into Monday morning. We expect Monday to be the worst of the event for the icing area.
