Traverse City Area Trail Report – 01/23

TRAVERSE CITY AREA UPDATE via Grand Traverse Area Snowmobile Club >> 01/23

Well, our 1 to 3 inches forecasted for today turned into a Winter Storm Warning. I just returned from a groom and there is 6 inches of fresh on the southern part of the trails and up to 10-12 inches as we went north.

Today, I trained our newest groomer driver Mike. He did an outstanding job for his first time in the seat. Thanks Mike for joining the team. In addition, (I forgot to mention in yesterdays post) Pat trained Jim on the north trail! Welcome aboard gentleman we appreciate the help.

Get out and ride those trails!! Remember, Ride Right, Ride Safe, Ride Sober.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Okay, remember how we mentioned sneaky snow this weekend? Well, it started yesterday, and will continue today at times, but fill in greater as lake effect by Sunday.
Here on February 21st, 2026, most of the snow and freezing rain will continue across the western UP and northwestern LP. We will see a shift to more snow into central and southern Michigan by late this evening. Then on Sunday, snow should be on-and-off across the entire state, with an uptick in typical lake effect zones such as the spine of the western UP, and the entire Lake Michigan shoreline. Lake effect bands are very finicky, and are subject to microclimate wind shifts. It's very possible that a few locations in our 1-3" zone see 4-5" by the end of the day on Sunday. We will be monitoring radar for a dominant lake effect band that stretches across the peninsula. The increase of wind on Sunday morning may also reduce visibility on all roadways to under half a mile, so travel only as fast as conditions allow.
Bottom line, plan for some more of that "annoyance" snow. Not enough to be called a big storm, but enough to cover all side roads, and many of our main roads. Accumulation will be higher during the overnight hours when surface temperatures are NOT at or above 32°F for most of the state. This also means our chances at freezing drizzle are higher during the daylight hours. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOkay, remember how we mentioned sneaky snow this weekend? We fully expect to see your emoji reactions to this snowfall still-to-fall through the morning commute on Monday. Are you ready for winter to be over, or do you need this snow like there's no tomorrow?

TRAVERSE CITY AREA UPDATE via Grand Traverse Area Snowmobile Club >> So, what do the trails look like after receiving over a half inch of rain and 50 degree temps yesterday? My thoughts exactly, so I went out and took a few pics. Surprisingly, not too bad. Is there dirt showing in spots, yes. Are they hard and flat, yes. Do we need more snow, yes, yes please. After tomorrow, temps are suppose to drop back under freezing. Now all we need is some snow. Keep doing those snow dances. #traversecity #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

TRAVERSE CITY AREA UPDATE via Ranch Rudolf >> Weekend Update Feb 20-22, 2026:
We will be open Saturday, 2/21 from 12pm to 4pm.
Beau and Knox have 1 hayride time available this Saturday and a couple spots left next Saturday for their winter hayrides. 231-947-9529 for reservations. They work through this month and start their spring vacation in March. Come enjoy a ride with our magnificent boys 🐴🐴
The weather has been wild this week. Some cold days. Some spring like days. Some rain. I’m honestly shocked there is snow on trails at this point. Lots of bare spots, some standing water in places, very thin and icy in areas, but still some snow somehow. Would call things poor overall, but there is actually some decent snow out deeper in the trail system where there is more tree cover. Certainly hoping for a few more good weeks of winter, but needing more snow ❄️ ❄️ #traversecity #snowphotos
