FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 01/12 Sunday morning same old report. Just a few flakes fell yesterday and light snow in the air this morning. Same trailer count at the 2 hotels in Grayling. Zero at the Days Inn and 3 at the Ramada. There were a fair amount of sleds into Frederic yesterday and the pic below was at the Swamp. Most riders had the same thoughts that it was thinner as you came into Frederic and better to the west and north. Scattered snow thruout the week coming in the predictions so lets see what happens this coming week and maybe we will get a good MLK weekend. Funny how I talked about yesterday people that I have met over the years that were regulars. One guy came in and said he hadnt been in for 20 years since he was a kid. And another old timer Jim that I hadnt seen in years but instantly I recognized him when he walked in. The most and greatest one that came in was my friend Wayne who is a cancer survivor and while when he walked in it took me a second to recognize him it was a great feeling when I did. His sledding days are done but he still has the spirit. Thanks for checking in. I just returned from an early morning run to home depot in Gaylord and I have to say that all the way up I 75 to exit 282 in Gaylord looks like perfect winter day in northern michigan with everything in the woods and distance looking nice and snow covered. To bad today they claim we might hit 50 BUT I talked to many riders yesterday and everyone saying the same thing that trails are pretty darn good. I drove back from Gaylord to Frederic along trail 7 and pics below show how things look with fresh grooming on trail 7. Took pics both north and south of trail 7 across from Porter Haus and saw 4 sleds out and about before I got back here. Pics below for your viewing pleasure. Thanks for checking in. I am now in Frederic at about 10;15 and its still sunny and up to 27 degrees. Saw many sleds yesterday and I think its safe to say that there are many sites about trails that things are very good for riding right now. Still nice and white every where and things look pretty good. I never heard from the guys that were going to the bridge yesterday to know if they got there or not. We had about a nice 3 new inches of snow overmight and sleds have been out and about. Had a group of 8 or so 4 stroke arcitic cats come in and they were heading up for the bridge. The few new inches help cushion the rock hard concrete feeling frozen snow under neath. Groomers are out and about but I cant tell you exactly where but as usual there have been reports of both good and bad trails. As I have said before I have seen alot worse conditions. The only significant changes to the map shown since yesterday are the addition of a 6-12" zone to focus on the back-side lake effect snow through the end of the day on Wednesday that will bump up totals across the eastern Upper Peninsula, and a slight shift south of the 1-3" zone towards Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Besides a few wobbles, the 2-5" and 4-8" zones remain largely the same. The entire Upper Peninsula now has winter alerts issued for this incoming snow. Notice, we've added a dashed green line to denote that areas south of it will deal with greater uncertainty in higher snowfall totals due to daytime temperatures above 32°F, plus the presence of low-level dry air filtering into the state. There should still be enough time to give everyone a solid half inch across the state, but for those primarily south of I-94, that may be all.
For timing, truthfully, not everyone will see the peak of precipitation by the end of the day. The front will be taking its time as it crosses the state this morning and afternoon. Upper Peninsula west of Newberry, you'll see your snow beginning by noon. After the noon timeframe, it'll be everyone else across the state. Last to see the precipitation start today will be southeastern Michigan, where flurries/light rain may not start until after 10 pm EST. Remember, gusty winds are possible within this passing winter storm, and as such, travel will become difficult at times as visibility drops to under a half a mile within the highest snowfall rates. Travel with care, and make sure to turn on headlights AND taillights when driving in any snow squall. Snow will finish by noon Wednesday, but continue as lake effect for the Upper Peninsula through the end of Wednesday, as denoted by the circled yellow area.
