Mass City – Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/01
MASS CITY / KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club – 01/01 Happy New Year! Trail update: Trails 12, and 13, and portions of 3, out of Greenland, have not been groomed due to lack of snow, and the warm temperatures that we have experienced. We need more snow to continue our grooming operations both for binding and coverage. We are hopeful that the snow in the forecast comes to fruition. We have a base of about 6 inches remaining in our yard in Mass City. We groomed all trails Saturday with the exception of Trail #12 between 101 and White Pine. We will get that tonight.
All trails are fair to good needing a little more love to get back where they were prior to our warm-up.

My Plow lanes are full so we’re forced to blow the snow back now and the blow piles are 15-20 feet high here
I love running my tractor but even that’s getting old
Feels like we’ll be riding our sleds into May this year for sure
The drifting has been overwhelming
Don’t let that 3’ mark on the snow stick fool ya, ya have to stand up to see out the windows here

The only trail that didn't get any love in the past 24 hours is Trail 12 between the Junction with 101 and the NCSC Clubhouse in Ontonagon. The guys are telling us that between the thaw, freeze, thaw cycle and the heavy, wet snow that came down this last week, these are some of the most challenging grooming conditions they have seen. We would rate trails fair to good right now. They need more love to whip them back into good/excellent.
We have all 3 machines scheduled to go out tonight and are hoping to groom our entire trail system for your riding pleasure! #ontonagon #westernupTRAIL REPORT: Good morning, SledHeads - The cavalry has arrived!! Why can't we just wave a wand and they magically appear like this daily!
We've had snow off and on the past few day's and anything lost during the warmup we most likely gained back plus a couple.
Trail's are in good condition but with heavy weekend traffic you'll find your best riding early in the day. Temp's remain about perfect with highs right around freezing and lows in the lower 20's. Get out and enjoy!

Here on February 21st, 2026, most of the snow and freezing rain will continue across the western UP and northwestern LP. We will see a shift to more snow into central and southern Michigan by late this evening. Then on Sunday, snow should be on-and-off across the entire state, with an uptick in typical lake effect zones such as the spine of the western UP, and the entire Lake Michigan shoreline. Lake effect bands are very finicky, and are subject to microclimate wind shifts. It's very possible that a few locations in our 1-3" zone see 4-5" by the end of the day on Sunday. We will be monitoring radar for a dominant lake effect band that stretches across the peninsula. The increase of wind on Sunday morning may also reduce visibility on all roadways to under half a mile, so travel only as fast as conditions allow.
Bottom line, plan for some more of that "annoyance" snow. Not enough to be called a big storm, but enough to cover all side roads, and many of our main roads. Accumulation will be higher during the overnight hours when surface temperatures are NOT at or above 32°F for most of the state. This also means our chances at freezing drizzle are higher during the daylight hours. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOkay, remember how we mentioned sneaky snow this weekend? Tracking more snow and colder temperatures into the weekend, breezy winds early next week, and another clipper mid next week.
Winds go more NW into this weekend bringing back some colder temperatures to support more snow. Better chances for the snow Saturday into N. Lower and the Tip of the Mitt. More lake effect snow chances for Sunday.
NW winds will become breezy Sunday into Monday. We also could have another clipper system to track next Tuesday into Wednesday. As of now, looking more like another snow/mix.

The bad news: We have an operator out with the flu and did not have anyone to back him up the past 2 days. The snow we got is heavy, wet and hard to work with and the temps have not cooperated to freeze our grooms this week, so the trails are breaking down very quickly.
Mother Nature is going to favor us tonight! Temps are dropping which will allow us to repair the damage and we are working diligently to get groomers in the seats this weekend.
