Snow, baby, snow! We’re having an epic start to snowmobile season and the Gaylord area currently has over 40 inches, with more in the forecast!
The groomers have been running since trails opened on December 1st. They are currently in good shape and all trails should be open by noon today. Please be patient while groomers get our trails into excellent condition with all this fresh snow!
A few things to remember about groomers:
– Groomers are out there to help you have a better riding experience and always have the right of way. – Please move off the trail when groomers are coming and allow them to safely pass. – If you approach a groomer from behind, kindly wait for the operator to signal you to pass. – Grooming can take place at any time during the day or night. – Have fun and stay safe!

UPDATE – 11/24 via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> One week to go until the trails open…..fat chance of there being any snow , so my best guess is the wait will be on. To bad we dont have the problem they have in South Dakota where they have snow but trails dont open till the 15th of December. The best day of riding that I had last year was on November 28 when Big John and I got in a nice 60 mile ride after a nice dumping of snow that morning. Everyone always asks me what I think the season is going to be like and my standard answer is I will tell you in April. I need to get some time in at Sledheads and get the front room ready for the season as I tend to let it get a little messy during the summer when I am not open. I put the winter signage back up last week on a nice 60 degree day. I picked up trail permits this week too but I am not putting one on my sled till we have rideable snow. I did see both Kalkaska and Grayling groomers out doing trail maintenance in the past month or so. Thats about it for now. Thanks for checking in. Pete
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> The next system looks to impact the state starting late Tuesday into early Wednesday. There is still some uncertainty with the track of this, which leads to potential changes in where mixed precipitation and snow will be seen. Although amounts for mixed precip should remain light, areas of eastern upper could see moderately impactful accumulating snow. #miweather #gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyThe next system looks to impact the state starting late Tuesday into early Wednesday. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> It's 30 and cloudy out this morning. Sleds were out and about yesterday and a guy just left here with a 3 inch paddle and said he was using his scratchers on it……still tons of snow in the woods but the trails are getting worn but not totally shot yet. I expect traffic will be slow but its not gonna get any better the next few days. I should load up my sled and head to the Keewanaw. Check out this cool link from Camp Grayling. www.facebook.com/share/r/1FYgLeXXJP/ Happy Valentines Day everyone. Thanks for checking in. Pete #gaylord#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Its a nice19 degrees this morning in downtown Frederic, at least it stayed a nice cold 6 degrees overnight at my house and I have already seen a few sleds this morning. Riding today should still be o.k. but hard out there and thats better than mush. Already had first rider of the day in and his pic is below with a couple other pics to show the snow is holding. Presidents weekend is usually a big weekend, I still dont like the forcast for next week but we still have lots of snow in the woods and its a long ways from gone. Thankfully it never made 32 yesterday and if the temps do reach the predicted highs it should only be for a little while in the late afternoon. Its cloudy and quiet out there and hopefully the sun stays hidden. If you do ride just be careful of icy corners. Thanks for checking in. Pete #gaylord#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> We know you'll pass by this post for snowfall today, but here on February 12th, 2026, it's quite a reflective moment to see just how far we have come this winter. Just a couple weeks ago it was lake effect snow every single day. Today, a light band of 1-3" near Munising is all we will need to write home about. We even tossed in some humor for those not in a designated snowfall zone. A couple slick spots will pop up along M-28 near Munising, and perhaps around Petoskey if a longer lake effect band happens to form, but this is more unlikely than likely. Enjoy your rather snow-free day here in Michigan in early February. If you've read this far, comment your favorite memory of winter to this point. - Chief Meteorologist Joel Fritsma #miweather #newberry #soo #petoskey#gaylordWe know you'll pass by this post for snowfall today, but here on February 12th, 2026, it's quite a reflective moment to see just how far we have come this winter. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Its wednesday about 11 a.m. at 25 degrees with a light snow in the air. Just had a group of guys in that rode down from Gaylord and their trail report was not encouraging as they said it was rough. We really havent had any new snow in a week and I am not thrilled with the weather forcast thru next tuesday showing 30s and even a 40 in that time frame. Most all of the snow that we have is well worn now. My supplier is pretty much back ordered on many items that I need. I tried to get 20 different items and all but 4 of them are on back order. Carbides especially have been back ordered since early december. Here we are almost half way thru Feb and we should be in our prime time right now. I wish I had better to tell you. Pic below are riders that come in every year. Thanks for checking in and snow chants may need to be started up again. Pete #gaylord#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
