SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/18 3/18- Good evening all! I am getting messages asking about snow conditions. Unfortunately, I have nothing to report. It’s cold, and we have a dusting at best. The ground is totally thawed, and even the woods have little to no snow. I am seeing hope for potential measurable snow in the next week. Marie Snowmobile Association Trail Report on MSA <> WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A cold front will bring light rain and snow showers to the UP today with some lingering snow showers near Lake Superior late. Highs will generally top off in the 40s early, except a bit cooler over the Keweenaw. Snow continues to fall over the far eastern end of the U.P. and over the northern L.P. We've had reports of just over 10" inches of snow in Escanaba! Winter Storm Watches are currently in effect for much of the peninsula, with the NWS forecasting snowfall that could easily top 6-12 inches. Happy first day of Spring! Or as we call it, 3rd winter!
In the Soo, we received around 4” of HEAVY wet snow overnight, with light snow still falling.
I have not yet heard how much fell in the surrounding areas, so please check in if you’re in the surrounding areas with what you’re seeing. It’s super tacky snow as you can see on my snow gauge.
I have not heard when/if groomers will be rolling yet. I know that trail 49 down to Kinross is very wet, and that our Kinross machine is back at the barn for the season. The good news is, everything was super flat before this new snow, so they probably don’t even need to be groomed at this point. Trail 8, 480 north of M28, and 889 are will be the best trails in ourr area for this time of the season.
Watch for wet spots! We got some significant rain before the snow. Also watch for downed trees as winds are supposed to pick up later, and all of the trees are pretty weighed down with snow right now.
I have heard that the roads are bad, so use caution if you’re traveling. Better yet, take your sled!😉

Hello everyone!
You may have noticed some movement on Groomer Tracker. Sadly, our machine that stays in Kinross during the season has been brought back to the Soo. There’s just too much water and not enough snow to warrant keeping it there “just in case”. Anything south of the Soo is pretty much down to a mix of ice, old snow, dirt, and water.
The good news is that the trails from the Soo and west toward Brimley, Bay Mills, and Raco still have a solid base, although it is icy for the time being. Road sides and crossings are bare. Grooming continues to be on pause in these areas as we cannot and will not groom ice. It’s too hard on the equipment and does absolutely nothing.
We are watching with cautious optimism for the return of some measureable snow tomorrow into Thursday. Some models show a couple of inches, others show up to 8 or 9”.
Any new snow will help, but it’s going to take some significant snow for us to justify rolling groomers out. If the snow flys, get out and enjoy it where you can! A few fresh inches on top of a solid base will make for some pretty decent late season riding!
