SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/29
2/29 8 pm update-
What a day around here! If you’re not already here or plan to be here early tomorrow, I’m sorry to say that the trails will likely start to fall apart quickly with the coming warm up. Coming out of the Soo on trail 8 is not good. Thin and rocky as we didn’t get the snow that Brimley/Bay Mills/Raco/Strongs/Paradise did. If you’re in the Soo, your best bet would be to trailer. The forest service roads out there have a ton of snow and will hold up longer than the trails.
We were able to groom most of 889 and all of 8 from Brimley to Ranger rd, and part of 480. I have a report that the gate on 472 at Johnson rd is locked. I have no idea why but I’ll try to find out. We cleared a ton of fallen trees today. Big thanks to Groomer Warren and I believe his helper was Scott. There is still a big one on the straight part of 889 between 8 and plantation rd, but it’s easy to get around it. There are some big humps from snowdrifts there too so use caution! Groomer Raco Dave is heading out to smooth those out now. Other than that part, 889 is good to excellent as of this evening! And 8 from a mile west of Brimley to Raco is also excellent!
We also hosted some of the volunteers from other clubs that are in town for the MISORVA groomer workshop for a hot dog lunch at our groomer barn. Great to have the opportunity to meet like minded volunteers!
I spent my morning clearing trees and then got a 112 mile ride in. Had a great lunch and warmed up at The Cozy Inn in Brimley. Stop in and support them and enjoy the “cozy” atmosphere!
Get it while you can! Bring a saw if you want to hit fire roads. Still some trees down on those.
Ride safe!!!

If you’re already here, trailer to Bay Mills/Raco. It’s worth it!

2/29 🚨 CAUTION🚨 I’m starting to get many reports of downed trees everywhere. My day of riding has now turned into a tree clearing mission. I’ll be headed out in the club SxS to clear trees. If there are any club members that are available and want to go with, I am leaving the clubhouse in the Soo around 10.
Groomer Warren and his buddy will also be out in the tracked SxS. Please give us time to work and clear the trees, or help out if you can. Sounds like 889 and 8 in the Brimley/Raco/Bay Mills area have many trees down, and about a foot of new snow.
Please share, and again, please use caution!
Thank you!

2/29 – good morning!
At my house in the Soo we got maybe 2-3” overnight. That’s probably being generous. The winds were crazy so I can’t tell for sure, but my gauge shows 5” total. Very light snow here now. Turbo checked in from Brimley and said there is a solid 8” out his way and it’s still snowing. A big thanks to Mr. Donnay for letting us know about a downed tree across trail 8 near Beune Rd, just west of Brimley. Also reported a foot of new snow there near Raco. Groomer Warren is heading out to cut it. As expected, it sounds like the highest snowfall amounts hit from Brimley west again. If you’re in our area, please comment with your snow totals. My assumption is that there are more than just the one tree down, so if you do ride, please be extra cautious. Carrying a saw is not a bad idea if you have the option. Again, I highly doubt we will send groomers out unless there are many trees down that need attention. Be safe!!!
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/17/26 Good morning all! I’m over in the western Yoop, and while it’s been very warm and sunny here ( 😔 ), the Soo and surrouding area has been only in the mid 30s. We had groomers out in the Bay Mills/Raco area yesterday morning. High 30s today means groomers will be parked, but temps drop tonight and then 5-9” of snow is in the forecast. We’ll come out of this tiny little warm up just fine. I’m seeing a lot of misinformation due to the fact that some areas of the UP have been in the 40s, so I wanted to clarify that our area is still in really good shape and didn’t see the warmth and sun that some areas of the central and western UP did, and fresh snow will only make it better! Come on up! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/15/26 Good morning everyone! HUGE thank you to Turbo and Diane for stepping up to help last night! They were out very early yesterday morning, and jumped in to help again last night when we had a hole in the schedule. Here’s what Turbo had to say- “Hello! For the second time today, we were back at it again grooming Trail 8 into Brimley and the power lines. We stepped up to the plate, because somehow signals got crossed and nobody was going out tonight to groom this route. We checked the Groomer tracker app at 10 tonight and noticed the groomer wasn't out. After a day with over a thousand sleds out we figured we better go out and clean things up and make it good for Sunday. It was a good thing we did. As you can see from the pictures it was whooped up from all of the traffic. We always want everyone to have the best riding experience while on our trails. We definitely didn't want to let anyone down. Trails are excellent! Get out and ride and enjoy the holiday weekend. Time for us to get some much needed rest. Until next time, Turbo” Looks awesome guys! Sunday riders will sure appreciate your hard work and dedication! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0215#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/14/26 Happy Valentines Day and happy trail stop day! Turbo and Diane went out very early this morning on their run on parts of 480, 8, and the 889 loop. Here’s their report- “Good morning everyone. Love is in the air! What a great way to spend our Valentines Day. I can't think of a more lovely way to treat Mrs. Turbo than to grab the Pisten Bully and groom some trails. All the while jamming out to some good old romantic music. Now for the good stuff. We left around 5:30am, to do the Mission Hill run(trail 889) we had to wait for the temperature to cool down. It got slightly above freezing last night. Passed our first sleds about 7:20. Four young men were up early hitting the trails. Not much has changed on the trails. Still excellent. Perfect riding conditions. Don't forget, it's our annual trail stop at the intersection of 8 and 889 in Raco. Please stop out and support us. Join the Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association if you're not already a member. We also have a donation box. Every little bit helps. Also, make sure you get a cup of our world famous hot cocoa. Make sure you tell them Turbo sent you. We are planning on going home and taking a nap. Have fun. Stay safe. Stay sober.” Thank you guys! We hope to see you at the trail stop today in Raco from 11-3 where trails8 and 889 meet! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0214#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

Thank you.” Stewart came upon Rich cutting up a tree in the trail and stopped to help him👏🏼👏🏼 Rich is 80 some years young and has been volunteering nearly as long as I’ve been alive. He’s a treasure to our club, and we so appreciate his service! Thank you again, Stewart! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0213#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
