SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/21 - last one today guys. These are all trail 8. Some right in the Soo where the trail comes into town from the east, looking east and west. The others are from out of town at 5 mile, near Brimley. Also did a video in the previous post. This trail was the thinnest before the warm temps today, so this is likely a decent representation of the worst that you’ll see as of tonight. Of course, if it’s warm again tomorrow, it will get worse. Only sharing for those that have been asking for updates as things warm up. Thanks guys! #soo #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/21 5:30 PM update. Ok guys, sun is going down and it’s cooling off a bit but we for sure lost a lot of snow cover today. I plan to drive and look down the trails, and I’ll report what I see. For those that are already here, or are coming no matter what, these are my suggestions on where to stage at to avoid a ton of road riding, or thin trails.
Option 1- Wild Bluff Golf Course at Bay Mills Resort and Casino. The trail is just to the north of the lot, maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 mile. It’ll be a little rough along the road, but it’s a short stretch to the trail. From there, you can hit the 889 loop, be sure to stop and take in the amazing view at Mission Hill Overlook. There are a ton of forest service roads all back in there and all the way through Raco and Strongs. Be sure to stop in to Sacy’s Restaurant for an excellent breakfast or dinner, and also Back Bay Grill and Games for lunch or dinner. It’s a quick walk right across the street from Wild Bluff.
Option 2- Park at Waboose Ski Trail head off of Ranger Rd, 2.5 miles north of M28. This is where the ORV route comes in, and again, tons of two tracks and forest service roads all back in there.
Option 3- there is a small parking area on the north side of M28, east of Strongs Corner. That is right on trail 47 which I have heard is not good (rocks mixed with snirt) but again, the forest service roads are also right there. There’s a place a little further down on M28 where you can cross over to south of M28 and hit all of those forest service roads too.
For maps, you’re on your own. You can see most of them on the Polaris Ride Command app. I’m sure also on VV Mapping, or similar. Also the Hiawatha National Forest website. This is the Sault Ste Marie sector.
Cell service can be spotty out there. Please download the what3words app and start it before you head out. Doing so should allow you to still pull up the 3 words that are assigned to your location in the event of an emergency. You can also text 911 with very little signal.
Please be mindful of signs that say no snomobiles or private property, and don’t trespass. Also be mindful of forest plantations.
Last but certainly not least, before or after you ride, please stop in and support the local businesses that have been here for all of us, snow or no snow. Who knows if this is the end of the season or not, but it’s been a very, very tough winter for area businesses.
Please be safe! It’s spring conditions for sure as of today, mixed with early season little to no base on the trails.
Let us know if you have questions and we’ll try to help.
Oh and if you appreciate what we do, we’d be so grateful for a donation! You can do so at www.sootrails.org. We are all unpaid volunteers. Thanks guys! #soo

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/21 mid afternoon update- it’s 45 degrees and sunny today. Boo! I’m not out riding so I can’t tell you what the trails look like, but I would bet they are getting soft and burning down in the thin areas. The icicles on my house are rapidly melting. I still show 9” of snow here at my house (down from 14” on Sunday) If you’re out riding our area today, please comment on this post or message us so that we can help others know what’s going on out there. Thanks! #soo ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/21 - good morning all! This is from yesterday, but I just got it. Our newest groomer recently retired after he sold his John Deere dealership in Ohio, so his nickname is Tractor Tim😉 He headed out yesterday on the power lines, also 889, and part of 480. Here’s what he had to say-
“Yesterday, we groomed 480 to the Spile Dam turnaround , 8 from Brimley turn off to Ranger rd (the power lines), & the Mission Hill loop (889) down to Bay Mills resort. The power lines are thin but very rideable . All of the other trails are good to very good . Big Thanks to Trainer Raco Dave , Turbo and my wife Melissa for riding shotgun”
Thanks for your time Tim! We are happy to have you aboard!
Videos in the comments.
I will update you all later. Grooming has been suspended until further notice, as things are about as good as they can get with the minimal snow we have and warmer temps today.
Think snow and cold! #soo #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/20- Good afternoon!
I love it when our operators get to bring their spouses with them to document the trip!
This report comes to us from Ann, groomer Dennis’ wife, on their run of 472 and 480 through the Spile Dam.
“What a beautiful hoar frosty morning to go out for a ‘slow snow roll’. It was 6° overnight, 15° when we left and 23° when we returned 5 hrs. later. Sure wish it would stay this way.
We panned west 472 & 480. Snow amount is same as yesterday. We were able to smooth out the trails. Trail 472 turned out good. Only area of concern is a deep trough just west of the “leaning deer blind”. It was open yesterday & frozen today but I assume will open back up.
Trail 480 has more thin spots with a little snirt showing in places & a few bumps that will take more snow to smooth out. Overall it came out just ok but enough snow to ride on”
Thank you Ann and Dennis for your time and the report!
It remained pretty cloudy today, and never did get above freezing. Just goes to show ya, you can’t always believe what your weather app says.
We hope you’re out enjoying it while you can! It is likely that grooming will be suspended until we receive new snow, to preserve what is left as much as possible, especially with very low traffic. We’ll keep updating! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/19 pm update- I finally got to get out and ride! Left this morning from the Soo on a fresh groom (thanks Buck!) on trail 8 toward Raco. As we’ve been saying, there is slag rock on 8 popping up, the worst of which is just past 6 mile, so just take it easy there and you’ll be just fine. In Raco, I met up with Raco Dave and several of our club members. We hit the 889 loop, and then some off trail, forest service roads and two tracks, as this is where the most snow is. I then ran down 480 to 472 and met up with some more of our volunteers, and went down 472 to Rudyard where we had a great lunch at Huck's Pub & Grill (thanks Jen!) Yes, the road riding in Rudyard where Snowchasers club is unable to groom the ditches is no fun at all, but it was worth it to stop and support Huck’s, as they have supported us!
From here, we rode 472 toward Sullivan Creek Rd. It’s pretty thin until Sullivan Creek road, but I heard it’s great from there west. From here, we took forest service roads back to 480 and those were AWESOME! We saw our newest volunteer, Marc, coming back in the Pisten Bully from his run on 8 between Brimley and Raco. Finished off the ride with another loop up 889 to the overlook, and back to the Soo on trail 8. The northeast side of 889 is getting bumpy from traffic, but I’m sure the Raco crew will straighten it out. 8 is also showing some bumps, but nothing crazy. Trails are definitely thin on 8 more so than anywhere. Again, lots of good snow on the forest service roads as those don’t see the same traffic, or have a rock base.
I saw maybe 20 other sleds out all day. All seemed to be enjoying themselves!
I’ll be updating as we move through the week. Thanks all! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/18 PM update-
Holy wah! It’s been snowing like crazy all day here. I don’t know how much we have, as it varies across the area. Over a foot, way over in some spots! Still snowing here at my house right off trail 8 in the Soo. Remember, there is little to no base, but we’re starting to build it. I know it’s going to warm up, but also be below freezing at night, so the thaw/freeze cycle will help with that part.
This morning, Lane groomed 49 South of Kinross, 494, and 472 to where we turn around north of Rudyard, and up through the Spile Dam on 480. These turned out really good! There are a few thin spots or wash outs that he was able to fill in. Bill groomed 889, the power lines, the Bay Mills Casino connector trail, and the rest of 480, and those also turned out really good!
Pete is out hitting the city trails tonight after some much needed snow fell here all day. 🚨🚨There are some hazards near the I-500 track where dirt and gravel piles from the race are now snow covered. Use caution if you’re coming and going from the Holiday Inn. 🚨🚨 There is a ton of snow and drifting by the airport that should smooth out nicely. I know he will have a full report for us later.
Lastly, Jay and I attempted to take sleds through 49 from south of the Soo to Kinross. It’s not happening guys. Way too much water, a bridge that’s out, and just too many hazards. The DNR is working with us on a fix for this trail that is way overdue. Stay tuned for news on that! It’ll be a multi year project, but we are hopeful it will indeed be permanent.
Trail 8 from the Sault to Brimley was done last night and will be again tomorrow AM.
Ryan will be hitting 8 between Brimley and Raco tonight.
Not many pics, as they were busy grooming, but here are a few for ya.
City trail report will be later tonight.
As always, we’ll keep updating! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos

I started at about 3:45 am, so the trails will have some time to set up before there is much sled traffic.”
