Gaylord Bureau – March 3, 2023 – 10:03 a.m. People are getting in some late-season riding and having a great time! Mild spring temperatures are starting to soften the trails but they are still in fair condition. Groomers are running at night when it’s colder, but trails may be wet and/or down to dirt in sections where traffic has been heavy. Once again I am sticking with poor conditions but I am still surprised at the people out riding. Already had one group in here and its now 11:30. Riders want to ride and they are doing it even in these conditions. Hard and Icy, pics below I just took outside here at Sledheads. Still alot of snow in the woods, its the trails that are gravel laden. We just have to deal with it. Not a flake of new snow here overnight and the big storm for downstate hasn’t hit yet. O.k. Several inches of new snow likely through tonight, heaviest across parts of the eastern U.P. and northwest lower. Cold temperatures filter in to northern Michigan behind the major winter storm. Consequently, for those without power, dangerously cold temperatures are expected this afternoon through Tuesday night. #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey 
They report that tree damage has led to ~87% of the county's residents losing power as of this morning (3/16). One webcam that was operational on the east side of the lake displays ice-encrusted trees along the shoreline. Phase 2 of the Winter Storm is kicking off! This will bring heavy snow and gusty winds still for the U.P. and Tip of the Mitt. The icing area we have talked about for the last few days landed where we thought it would. Leelanau down to Wexford and Northeast. These areas could see up to .5" of ice through today and tonight with isolated higher amounts. Winds will continue to gust upwards of 40-50mph. The snow totals map you see is on top of what you have already seen.
Don't be fooled, the lull from the initial burst to the second part is the system nearing. The second phase will be the worst with this storm. This afternoon - Monday morning.

The heaviest ice accretion takes aim in a localized area from Traverse City to Gaylord to Atlanta with over 0.50" of ice expected. Around this area, a zone of significant icing between 0.25' to 0.50" is expected - which is still enough to take down tree limbs and create power outages. The worst of the icing will be tonight into Monday morning, and then we deal with high winds moving in Monday morning as well which will only exaggerate the effects of this event.
