MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails – 2/15 Two pictures from the tunnel on US 41 show the good(ish) and the bad. Water standing in the trail and a base that is still holding strong. Going to assess the trail tomorrow after letting the cold and a little snow hopefully work to our advantage, and make a plan for recovery. The operators haven’t lost faith yet and neither should you! <> MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County Sorva – 2/15 TRAIL REPORT, Wednesday, February 15, 2023 8:00 a.m. VERY WET CONDITIONS! Dang, mid 40’s yesterday with almost a half inch of rain falling through the night and still coming down. Overall trails are in a fair condition. Watch for flooding and standing water through the whole trail system, especially Trail 418. From just East of AuTrain West to Trail 417 South the base is gone and gravely. We will be watching closely as rain changes to snow and temperatures fall. Grooming will start as soon as possible with what is left and hopefully clean up this mess. Grooming is on hold to let everything freeze back up. Anywhere that holds water, will need time to freeze back up before we run over it with a heavy groomer. We are hoping to try grooming again tomorrow night. Then we will have more to tell you all. Wish we had something better to report. No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.
Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks.
