Petoskey Snowmobile Club
Base: 6 inches
Current Trail Conditions: Good to Excellent

We picked up a couple inches of fresh powder yesterday and a couple more the day before that. Just what the doctor order for some outstanding trail conditions. The groomers are out every day keeping things nice and smooth. Temps are very cold and keeping the snow on the lighter, fluffier side. You may see occasional drifting in the open areas of the trails.

It’s a great time to ride. Be safe. Watch for other sleds and groomers. Most importantly, don’t drink and drive. Michigan has already seen a few snowmobile deaths this season. Don’t become another statistic. Also, stay off the lakes! Most are not frozen sufficiently yet.

We are sorry to say that due to a lack of help, our Sunday Morning breakfast buffet will not be held this year. We just don’t have enough people to do all the activities we used to do so we are concentrating on keeping the trails in the best shape possible.

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/02

Our Lake Superior Snowmaker kicked in with a bunch of localized snow.. Because of the size of our county, amounts vary from from 4-6" to 15 to 20". That’s a "guesstimate"-we’ll get official snowfall Monday.
All the groomers in all areas are out.
Gogebic Range Trail Authority: 11 N was groomed yesterday for the first time-haven’t talked to the groomer yet, but know it has been groomed. 11S is open & groomed – still a little brushy is some areas but being worked on. Trails 2-8 and 160 are all freshly snow covered and being groomed today.
From the Lake Gogebic Area-the groomers are out on all trails… everything is freshly groomed and in good shape. IMPORTANT: There are Logging Trucks in the vicinity of the junction of 102 AND 8-W. You MAY NOT ride plowed roads-you MUST observe the snowmobile trail signs. (Have heard they may be issuing tickets.) Stay on the trails and if you see a logging truck, pull over immediately.
Watersmeet groomers reporting all trails being groomed daily and Good conditions.

It’s time for our usual caution about ice: There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you plan to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.
And one more safety note… groomers can and will be out any time of the day or night, especially this week…so PLEASE pull over when you see them.
We want you to have a great time…and most importantly, to stay safe.

Check out web cams throughout the area to see the snow amounts for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info

FYI: Season snowfall to date from the Gogebic County Road Commission as of 12/30/09: 70". Will get an update on Monday.
