Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/04

We’re living up to the reason we’re called "Big Snow Country." Season Snowfall to date: 91.4"
All the groomers in all areas are out.
Gogebic Range Trail Authority: Grooming is ongoing. 11 N has been double groomed-you’ll run into some wetness on the west side going north, but it’s marked with signs. 11S is freshly groomed – still a little brushy in some areas but work on it is almost complete. Trails 2-8 and 160 are all snow covered and groomed or being groomed.
From the Lake Gogebic Area-the groomers are out on all trails… everything is freshly groomed and in good shape. IMPORTANT: There are Logging Trucks in the vicinity of the junction of 102 AND 8-W. You MAY NOT ride plowed roads-you MUST observe the snowmobile trail signs. (Have heard they may be issuing tickets.) Stay on the trails and if you see a logging truck, pull over immediately.
Watersmeet groomers reporting all trails being groomed daily and good conditions.
After two close calls, you need to be aware groomers can be out any time of the day or night, so PLEASE pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them.
We want you to have lots of fun and a great time…therefore, your safety is our #1 priority.

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you plan to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Check out web cams throughout the area to see the snow amounts for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info

Cadillac / Baldwin Area Trail Report – Wolf Lake Motel and Resort – 01/04

Hi Everyone, Cold has been the word for the last three mornings, but day time highs have been in the high teens to low twenties. We have been getting some LES snow everyday, but not tons. More snow would be nice, but conditions are still good to very good depending on the area. LES snow is forecasted for the next 7 days, with a system snow on Thursday, so conditions are going to just get better and better. But again with any forecast, I believe it when I see it. All the weekend warriors have went home, so this will make for some sweet riding this up coming week, with light to no traffic. One thing that is nice around here, we are in the middle of 6 different grooming clubs, (which we are members of 4), if one isn’t grooming, one of the other Clubs are grooming. There will be some ice and snirt out on the trail in the curves from all the heavy weekend traffic, so slow down and enjoy yourself. If you don’t have a snowmobile or yours is broken, no problem, WE HAVE ON-SITE SNOWMOBILE RENTALS right here at the Resort. Most county roads are snow covered, so getting fuel or food shouldn’t be a problem. There is tons of snow in the woods, so two tracken and seasonal roads are a blast right now. (Which there are tons of). THE LAKES ARE NOT SAFE YET.

Rooms and Snowmobile Rentals are available.

We are members of the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan, Baldwin Trailriders Snowmobile Club, Benzie/Manistee Snowbirds Snowmobile Club, Irons Area Tourist Association Snowmobile Club, Wellston Area Recreation and Tourist Bureau Snowmobile Club, Lake County ORV Club and the Michigan Snowmobile Association, which are the local grooming clubs. I can not thank these guys and gals enough, they do a lot of work for free, so we all can enjoy this sport. I would only think that if someone is complaining about a bumpy trail on Saturday afternoon, come to a couple club meetings and see just what these people do. They would never complain again. Thank you again.

Call 231 745 4101 8am until 10pm. See ya soon on the trails.
