Grand Marais Trail Report – 11/30

Grooming Tomorrow Night! Weather Permitting

As for the Trails: Caution Flags are UP. Driver Marc was out last night putting up signs and said there really isn’t much snow on the trails, there is about 3-4 inches on Trail 8 West (H-58 heading west from town), Trail 888 had up to 10 inches of semi-packed snow but warned to watch out for holes in the trails, wet spots, and bare areas on the pavement.

There has been a lot of snowmobile traffic buzzing about since Thursday and they’ve managed to pack down the fluff. Plus the warmer weather and rainy conditions last week took it’s toll on the snow. On a brighter side, the forecast is calling for daytime temperatures to be in the 20’s most of the week, sub-zero and single digits at night with 40 to 70% chances of snow all week.

The cold could create a lot of ice on the wet spots and holes. BUT, they are calling for 2 to 3 inches tonight and 3 to 5 inches tomorrow.

Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 11/30

Well, tomorrow snowmobile season begins! We’ve got more snow than the record books have ever shown coming this early so there’s no problem there. Unfortunately, as you early snowmobilers know, we do have to deal with wet conditions in certain trail areas this early in the season – even though we’ve been getting some pretty cold temps. It will take a lot of packing the trails down and then freezing to get the wet areas good and frozen. The groomers have been out on trails where they were allowed, pre-snowmobile season, just packing the snow, however all three groomers are set to head out first thing Monday December 1st with drags where they will benefit, but probably mostly still just packing the trails for now. Trails 8 east, 8 west and 1 north will be in the best shape this early on with the driest conditions and you can look for very wet conditions on all other trails. Also, remember to stay on the trails so as not to jeopardize our land easements where the trails cross private property.

Contrary to previously reported, trail 13 south will be completely open as of December 1st where it was always closed due to muzzle loading hunting. I guess there’s too much snow for them to go hunting this year. However, this trail will be very wet and has not been packed by the groomers yet due to hunting over the last half of November.

Please check back often as reports will be updated. When you come up, please support those businesses that display the Gogebic Area Grooming Supporter decal as they stand with us in local grooming efforts. Please ride safe.
