The Gaylord area has picked up about 8 inches of snow during the week and the forecast calls for 8 to 12 inches on Thursday night and Friday. Groomers are heading out to get the trails in shape for the weekend.
Sledheads of Frederic – 01/08
Lets ride, the time is here and there is a storm predicted for today yet..That all sounds good to me. The sled count is steadily going up. Its now 1:45 and I just walked in the door here in Frederic. We were open first thing this morning but I have been at our weekly Century 21 meeting which took a while longer than usual this week. I am expecting a busy weekend even though we could still use more snow. I am certain the feelings are nobody wants to wait anymore so that means it wont take long to tear the trails up but that is how it goes. So we are finally off a running. You know its winter when the kids in Grayling start riding their sleds to school. I just took this picture outside of the Grayling HIgh School. Thanks for checking in. Pete

January 8th, 2015 – We’re still expecting lots of snow, up to 11-inches, over the next 24 hours – but with lake effect snow you never know when it’ll stop. Our groomer drivers were able to install a culvert on trail 102 Wednesday, however technical difficulties prevented them from getting the groomer all the way through to trail 11, but they’ll be back at it asap. 102 has been a big problem for us this year with lots of water in areas where we have never had to deal with water in prior years. I’ll keep you posted when I know more on those conditions. We really couldn’t be asking for better weather conditions right now so the trails are getting back to where we (and you) would like to see them with all other trails being groomed at this time. We are currently in a very cold snap for the remainder of this week, through next weekend with more snow in the forecast almost every day.
You can legally ride any county road that does not get plowed, but check with the Forest Service for a map to these roads. They have a waterproof one for $10.00. Call 906-932-1330 or go to www.fs.usda.gov/ottawa for more info.
The new snowmobile maps are out and available at most local businesses. Please remember that only money put into the wooden map money boxes with the photo of the groomers on it goes back to the trails – so please be aware of this and watch for this.
That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop! We can’t wait to see you all back up again enjoying our beautiful area. Keep checking back for more updates as conditions change. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area please visit the chamber website at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call them at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC). Have a great day and a great ride.
