Greenland Trail Report – Superior Snowmobile Club – 01/08

01-08-2016 I can’t believe we have not reported since Jan 1st. We are having way to much fun I guess. We do know we have been very busy in our area. Got our first snow Dec. 18-19 (27 inches) and conditions were good but everyone around us was not as fortunate so snowmobilers made use of whatever trails had enough snow to ride and added fun of fire roads and logging roads. Everyone would leave with a smile on their face and say they were glad they came.

The little bit of freezing rain a couple weeks ago actually did us a favor as it settled the snow down, froze up at night and gave us a great base. The last couple weeks, the riding radius has grown to more miles. The last couple days we’ve added 5 inches of new snow and still snowing. Grooming has taken place every night since Dec. 19th, wherever snow on trail permitted. If snow too thin for grooming, the groomer stayed off to not pull dirt up and it was still snow covered enough for snowmobiles-same has been true with water areas. So here we are 01-08-16 with a great prediction for the next several days for much more snow. It has been snowing here all morning and as I look out-it’s still coming down.

We had a situation with part of our trail #13 loop from Greenland to Twin Lakes, due to logging operation but that has been resolved for this year-thank goodness-it is such a beautiful trail and enjoyed by everyone that rides it.

Just a reminder that Superior Snowmobile Club now has a website www.superiorsnowmobileclub.org and we hope you will check it out and pass on any suggestions. Also, we’d sure like for you to join our club at $25. per year. You’d be surprised how that $25. helps out with our expenses for fuel, maintenance and costly repairs. Memberships can be obtained thru our new website, or from Krupp’s Resort or Krupp’s Mini-Mart in Twin Lakes and Pat’s Yamaha/Polaris in Greenland.

We would also like to remind everyone to watch our daily snowfall totals on our township website which is: www.elmrivertownship.com On the home page click “snowfall totals.”

Enjoy your sport and “ride safe.”

Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 01/08

January 8th, 2016 — The too warm temps (low 30’s) we’re experiencing today will quickly be replaced by 20’s on Saturday for highs and down into the single digits Sunday thru Wednesday! Very good news as this will go a long way to freezing up any wet areas we’ve been battling. Also, new snowfall amounts over the last couple of days of about 8-inches have helped to soften some of those bumps on the trails. More snow is expected over this next week with varying amounts reported; one report has amounts totaling up to around 20-inches, another report says about 24-inches from the 11th to the 15th. A lot will depend on location as the higher terrain of the western U.P. (especially the north end of Lake Gogebic and the hills to the north of the lake) usually sees the most snowfall when Lake Superior lake effect snow sets in. All good news – if it happens the way it’s supposed to, and so far this winter the weather has been pretty unpredictable. Again, cross your fingers! Groomers are out panning the trails where they can run without doing damage to the already wet areas. I will let you know as soon as grooming with drags on is possible.

With many of the trails in poor condition at this point you might like to look to the “un-plowed Forest Service roads” for some riding. You may have to trailer to them but you may also save yourself some wet rides to get to them otherwise. Check in at the Ironwood, Watersmeet or Ontonagon Forest Service building to get more info on where you can legally ride.

I will keep you posted with any updates on the weather and on the trails.

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area please visit the chamber website at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC).
