SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 03/03

3/3/25
Good evening!
I have some mixed news, as is usually the case this time of the year. I took a ride down 49 from the Soo to Kinross to see our friends at The Well Diggers Ass. Also hit 472 to 494 around the airport in Kinross.

The city trails, trail 49 to 9 mile, and trail 8 were excellent with lots of base and snow coverage. 49 gets thin south of 9, with dirt patches showing in the parts where the sun hit.

Definitely could have used scratchers too. I was running hot. 472 and 494 haven’t been groomed due to a couple of calls ins and warm temps, so they are rough. We’ll do what we can as soon as we can.

Everything is totally rideable, but know that roads are bare again so trails that have sections along the road like 49 south have tricky sections.

There is snow in the forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday, so we’ll see how it shakes out.

Spring riding conditions are here, especially south of the Soo.
I’ll keep you updated!

Gorgeous sunset tonight, so I thought I’d share🌅

Hey guys! Rider report from Greg regarding trail 49. If you subscribe to our system on Groomer Tracker, you can see that we have not been through there since Lane set the trail a week ago, but we’ll update once we are able to get in there.
For now, good advice from Greg👍🏼
“The trail to Kinross is a disaster right now (trail 49 from Alberta Ln in the Soo to Gaines Hwy) The power line just as you get out of town has a big wet hole and once you get past that there are holes in the farm fields. Stay out until they open it. The big swamps are fine they just have no snow. The trails in kinross are good. Everything other than Soo to kinross is amazing”
We’ll keep you posted! #soo

Gaylord Bureau –

March 1, 2025

11:40 a.m.

Both groomers are out on the trails again! We received some fresh snow Friday night and Trail #4 west and #7 south are in good condition. Trail #4 east and #7 north are fair. Have a great weekend out there!

Thank you to our grooming friends in Lewiston, Grayling and Indian River for jumping in to help us while our tractors were down!

Check out this live feed to see trail #7, just north of Gaylord.

A few things to remember about our groomers and trails:

– Groomers are out there to help you have a better riding experience and always have the right of way.
– Please move off the trail when groomers are approaching and allow them to safely pass.
– If you approach a groomer from behind, kindly wait for the operator to signal you to pass.
– Grooming can take place at any time during the day or night, so stay alert.
– Always ride on the right side of the trail.
– Ride safe and ride sober.

Want to be ready? Get a free trail map delivered right to your mailbox and plan your adventure!

As always, check back with us for updates and weather reports.

Sledheads of Frederic – 03/03

It’s monday afternoon at 43 degrees and 1:30 p.m. in downtown Frederic, Its not looking good for this week or for the rest of the 28 days of the sledding season. As high as 50s later on this week. I was around town but didnt open up this weekend. I saw sleds over at the swamp via my cameras on saturday, not alot but there some out and about. Things headed downhill from saturday into sunday and I didnt see any sleds. Alot of dirt and rock hard ground out there. At least we got a couple good weeks out of February which is way more than we had last February. Hopefully the u.p. holds out for a while. I would love to maike one more trip up there. I will cut back on updates until something worthwhile comes up like maybe a huge snowstorm. Pics below are out in my parking lot about noon today. Thanks for checking in and remember if you come up in the summer and my truck or car is here just stop in and say hi. I dont turn the open sign on but alot of times I am here just working in my office. Thank you to all that came in to see me when we did have snow. Season number 29 coming up next year. Thanks for checking in. Pete
