St. Ignace Trail Report – 02/09

I can’t believe that I am gonna say this, but our trails are in pretty good shape. We groomed everything up on Monday while it was soft, and it has frozen really hard and fast. In fact some of the trails are glazed over with ice. The woods aren’t as bad, but the grade is icy for sure.

So here is the beak down, you can ride if you want to, but be darn careful. Things are icy, and very hard, and smooth. There are 2 sections of about 100′ of gravel on the RR Grade coming out of Iggy which will pose a bit of a problem. The pipeline is in tough shape. It is really thin and sections of the trail are sand. On Tuesday, Dave told me you could pick you way through there with a sled, going from side to ride and get through, but it isn’t flat and fast for sure. The rest of the trails are smooth, a bit icy and very very hard. All of the water problems are gone. We have the absolute perfect base if we can get some snow topper.

If you wanted to bypass the couple of trouble spots and ride from castle rock Rd, park out by the expressway, don’t try to drive into the trail. That fist hill is glare ice, no way to bring a trail back down if you make it to the top.

Got some pics for you today. The first 3 are RR Grade out of Iggy, you can see a short gravel section in there. You can kinda get off to the side, but it is tough. The next set are Castle Rock Rd, and the RR Grade out of Iggy, looking in all 3 directions. This is pretty much what the trails look like everywhere else.

Be careful out there kiddies!

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 02/09

Overall conditions are poor to fair with some good riding once you get out of the towns. Grooming is still on going. They are trying to keep the trails in the best shape they can with what they have to work with.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY-Overall conditions are poor to fair and extremely icy. Conditions again once you get out on the trails you will find some good riding. Trails 2 & 8 out of Wakefield are in fair to good conditon. Trail 160 from the lookout to the Wisconsin border conditions are bare. 11N is poor to fair and again closer to the lake conditions are bare. 11S conditons are poor to fair. Closer to the Wisconsin border where the logging is ongoing conditons are bare.

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS – Grooming is ongoing. Trails are in fair condition once you get out on the trails(in the woods). Parking lots, Streets and Highways are bare. You will run into a number of poor areas and encounter bare spots. Trails are extremely icy.

U.P.THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET-trails are poor to fair again with a number of bare spots. Again once you get out of town you will find some good riding. Parking lots, Streets and Highways are bare. Trails are extremely icy so use caution.

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

You can take a look at web cams throughout the area to check out the conditions for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info.

Here are a few gas station updates. The gas station in Paulding is closed so plan ahead for filling up. On the up side the gas station in Marenisco is now open.
